Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Hi everyone one thanks for the reply. Appreciate your comments but I really wouldn't want to use an adaptor. My second choice would be to change my RCA plugs on the interconnect to a quality XLR such as Neotech, Furutech. But my first choice is to have RCA on the Amplifier. That would be perfect for me.

has anyone tried silver interconnects with the Nords ?

Yesterday I tried a pair of high quality silver interconnects, which I had laying around, on the Nords and it creates high frequency buzz, similar to ground loop, through the speakers. The cables bring more details, in a good way - like more air, space, etc but I can't use it. I also had another silver XLR interconnect and that also has the same problem. Neither of these cables had this buzz with other amplifiers I had.

Copper XLR interconnects are fine and dead quiet.

I personally gravitate to all copper for my gear. Either Kimber or Siltech do it for me, and now I use Neotech speaker cables and powercords - awesome performance for the money.

Thanks Joe. I hear that a good quality occ silver interconnects are lot smoother than the copper but it could be system dependent as well. Which Kimber and Siltech models are you using ?

Siltech 550 XLR IC's.

Kimber KS-1116 and KS-1016 IC's, KS-2436-AG USB (not needed right now), KS-6063 speaker cables (also not in use right now).

I'm using my own build-line of 99.999% ultra fine strand copper balanced XLR IC's which are nicely shielded. No noise. Are the silver IC's you're using shielded?

Mike, I don't know. I will ask.

From the description, seems like its shielded

"These revolutionary cables are insulted against any noise induction by the best dielectric isolation material ever applied to cable productions: hollow core foam Teflon tubing symmetrically configured to Acoustic Zen's "Constant Air Twist" geometry."

I been meaning to try a pair of these OCC Silver IC's, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I am already using one of them in an AES/EBU configuration and find it very good. They come out to about $375 a pair with the discount and the currency conversion. I am using Steven's OCC Copper IC's and Speaker cables for the rest of the system with the Neotech power cords he also sells.

I think I still have a pair of Audio Magic Excalibur silver balanced cables in the storage bin I can try and see if they buzz.

Hey Jack,

Maybe I missed some postings, but what are your opinions of the Nord amps with your various loudspeakers now that they are surely broken in? You're running the Sparkos Op Amps, correct?

Edit: I forgot you have the stereo amp

Jack, I use some of the Steven's power cord and they are real bargain for the price. I have been meaning to try his silver cable but due to this buzz issue, I wanted to get it resolved before proceeding. If you can't try any silver cable with the Nords and report back I would appreciate it.

I will try to find them tomorrow and give them a try. I think I have had this pair at least fifteen years. I use to run them between a Classe' CD player and a Classe' integrated.

Mike

Still haven't tried the Nord with anything but the KO's. For a month with the Sparkos and now for about two weeks with the SI's. I have tried both configurations with the W4S STP-SE and the Modwright LS-100. With the Sparkos I preferred the W4S and with the SI's the Modwright's tubes. I plan to swap the Nord and the Nuprime ST-10 out this weekend and see how the Nord does with the Spatial's with the SI's in place. When I tried Joe's with the Sparko's and the Rev B buffer it was much better on the KO's than the Spatial's. I suspect the SI's will be a better match for the Spatial's. Either way the Nord is a really good amp at a fair price. If you are still thinking about the stereo version for upstairs I don't think you will be losing anything over the mono's except an extra power cord. Still have to decide which amp sounds best with which speaker but either one of them beat out the W4S mAMPS which I just sold. Another contender maybe worth exploring is the Digital Amplifier Companies' "Cherry" amps. Like Nuprime they are using their own proprietary Class D module. They seem to be very popular amongst the members on AC. Tommy uses transformers like Nuprime rather than SMPS.

I tried the Audio Magic Excalibur silver cables between the Modwright and the Nord and no hum at all. Even left them in for a change. By chance are those AZ cables using Cardas XLR's? Some people were having trouble with the Cardas XLR Adaptors causing a hum.

Jack, thanks for verifying. No the AZ cables doesn't use Cardas connector. I have another cheap silver XLR and it also causes hum. I will connect the DAC directly to the Nords using the AZ cables and see if it hums as well or not. Interestingly, the same cable worked fine with the preamp and Pass Labs amp.

It actually gave me a chance to try the Excaliburs again. Reminded me I really liked the sound of Audio Magic's silver formula.

Thanks Jack..... Great memory you have and yes I'm still on the fence for my upstairs system.

We have just launched our new dedicated Nord website http://www.nordacoustics.co.uk as Nord is now a high percentage of our business we will carry the iQ site on for a while but will move everything over. Hopefully is simpler and better to use.

A few weeks ago I bought a pair of Nord One Up NC500 amps with the Sparkos Class A op amp. Needless to say I am impressed. This is not the Class D that I remember.

These are powerful, have 3D, a big sound stage and are sweet with the vocals. Break in seems to take forever on all Class D. But after a few weeks of continuous play, wow, I am impressed.
