Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Tom

Apparently the wiring inside of one of the Cardas adaptors is not right. Might want to contact the seller and swap them out. You might find a pair of Neutrik adaptors locally. Also if you are still using Dave's cables see if he can re-terminate the amp end. Glad you figured it out.

So it's not the fact that I have no ground wire in my single ended cables? But probably the adapter is out of whack?

I have measured the resistance of my Cardas adaptors and I am getting odd results. I now have hum through the adaptor but only in one channel. I have taken them out of circuit and given my results to my electronic whizz and await his response. It sounds not dissimilar to what you have found but I do not want to jump to conclusions.

Tom

If it was the IC's I would think they would both do it so swapping the adaptors from left to right with the original IC would be the only to find out. Another set of adaptors from Neutrik or Switchcraft from a local store might give you an answer to. You could return them if the problem persists. I would also pm Dave through AC if the cable in use was his as me might have an explanation or idea of a solution. I don't suspect Cardas is the actual OEM for those adaptors anyway and they are probably just re-branded.

My techie whiz has looked at my results and thinks that the Cardas may have a 1k resistor wired between Pin 1 and Pin 3. I measured a resistance of 995 ohms. His view is that on an active preamp no real problem but on a passive preamp 'devastating'. Why would Cardas put a resistor there? I do not want to take it apart as I can still get my money back on them.

My other cheappie adaptors measure normally with Pin 1 and Pin 3 shorted.

Just realized mine unscrew so here's a pic....

Could you possibly measure the resistance between Pin 1 and Pin 2 and see if it is 1k ohms? Sorry it should be 1 and 2...

Yep, tried that yesterday but no luck. However.....I dug deep in my bag of old goodies and found a set of Neutrik brand xlr cables and low and behold the hum goes away! :disbelief: Without the cheater plug I should add.

So even though the one end is attached with an adapter to connect to the RCA input on both the Tisbury passive and tubed preamp the balanced cable did the the trick. With the passive I get dead silence and the tubed pre I get the usual slight hiss from the tweeter but no hum from the mid driver.

So what is it about the Cardas adapter I showed a pic of that has the hot pin on it correctly? Why does....ahhh who cares. :D

I'm not understanding what you had before and what you're running now that fixed it regarding the cables and adapter. Can you spell it out for me?

Before, I had single ended cables with a Cardas xlr adapter at the Nord input with RCA at the preamp input.

Now, I have balanced cables with xlr at the Nord input and a RCA adapter at the preamp input.

Hope that makes sense.

Picked up the Hattor passive yesterday and have it hooked up to the Nord amps and its mind blowing good. I'm curious to try the Sparkos here soon enough but need more time. Oh, and the Hattor is dead silent with the Nords...:)

Here's the version I got.

Nice! Spooky how they have the same kind of look, both the geometry and the silver on black.

Hi, that is nice!
Are all the connectors XLR or XLR+RCA as in this picture from Hattor website?

(This is my first here and I found really strange that I cannot post a link to an image, is this to make like difficult for people or because somebody abused of that feature?)

Hi everybody.

I'm going to buy the nord stereo amp. And that will be my first "serious" amp.
However my budget does not allow me to go too quickly, therefore at first I will not be able to buy a pre.

What am I risking / should I pay attention to if I connect the Nord amp directly to the line out of my digital source, relying (initially) only on the volume digital attenuation done by the source itself?

Apologies for the probably dummy question....

Nice looking unit Tom! What does the "dualmono" button do?

Still loving my Nords with Sparkos op amps here. I need to swap in the SI994's again (to compare with the Sparkos) but can't stop listening to the Sparkos as they are so easy (and fun) to listen to.

Franz,

Welcome to the forum, thank you so much for joining.

It is kind of hard to tell what is offered from the less than informative Hattor website, but it appears that if you chose the balanced option you get a mix of SE and Balanced inputs and outputs. Maybe the guys who have dealt with Hattor will chime in.

Jack,

You've had your Nord Stereo amp for a couple of weeks now I believe...how's it performing for you with the Sparkos op amps so far? How many hours have you got run up?

Mike

It's got well over 250 hours on it now and is much better than it was out of the box especially the mids and highs. Probably needs about another two weeks to be sure. Then i will swap it and the Nuprime out between the two different setups and see how it sounds with the Spatials. Probably will try the SI's eventually.
