New Vintage Audio Restoration HQ

The 807 is a 6L6 with a plate cap instead of the plate being connected to the base. This allowed it to run much higher plate Voltages without arcing.

What amp do you run that uses those?

Going to be comparing some of my favorite French tubes vs new Italians, and replacing an RCA rectifier with an Italian one as well!

I have to clean it up and do something about the smell of the paper rolls, which are again like an old cabin in the woods. I' not sure if I will repaint the cabinet. I has a bit of rust on it where the paint was worn off. The main cosmetic fix seems to be replacing the glass on the meter, which is missing a shard. That's something I've done before so I'm on solid ground with that. But it really needs cleaning- my hands smell like mold just from touching it.

Wipe all but the paper roll with vinegar and water towel as a way to remove the moldy smell to some extent that isn't a harsh chemical that will remove finish. May take several applications. Let me know if you need product recommendations at that point. Also take the case off, clean inside with vinegar and water (way and let stay on for a bit), then spray with KILLZ on the inside of the unit. That is a big help and will help absorb some of the smell from the wires.

Thanks!

Oddly, the name plate is mounted upside down. If I get the cabinet repainted I might correct that.

Take the tube paper roll out, stick in a large bag that is filled with baking soda at the bottom, close, and let it sit for a week or two at least. Also clean the roll unit itself with vinegar and water. That should help as well.

You will need to heavily decontaminate the outside of the case to help attack the smell. It is permeated every where and can be a chore to remove.

Also don't overlook the plastic knobs on the unit - they retain quite a bit of smell.

The Triplett cleaned up pretty well. It had a dirty switch and the meter sticks a bit mid scale. So I have to take it apart again, also because I need to replace its glass. I cleaned it inside and out to rid it of the moldy smell. I found a bad 0.1uf cap that got a nice upgrade to a nice polystyrene Rel Cap. I also replaced some rusting screws with stainless of the same appearance.

It took a bit sorting out how to use all the switches. But once I got that, I was able to test a 6SN7. A nice feature is its possible to change which section is being tested by moving just one switch. So looking for tubes with matched sections is much easier.

I've cleaned the outside and inside of the case several times and dirt keeps coming off of it! I'm going to keep at it. The smell is much better but I think it needs more Clorox.

Nice! Yeah my Weston has that switch feature and it's nice for sure.

The one thing I leaned about these old testers - they have more dirt and grime on them than you would think is possible!
