Mark, my original VPI Classic has the same clamping system.A small washer underneath the record and then the clamp creates a convex shape flattening the edges of the record to the platter very similar to Oracle who I believe did this first followed by others like SME and Brinkmann.

have seen the Triangle Art tables at Newport for several years running with NAT audio- they are so gaudy looking in person. ymmv.
I agree with Keith as far as the aesthetics of the Triangle Art tables, but they do sound excellent and of course cosmetic appeal is totally subjective. I'm not surprised, it's a simple effective solution.
I think it was Merrill that came up with an even better solution (the rim clamp) that VPI has perfected. I just hate using those things, especially after drink or two!
