New Table

And I've made a few improvements to the system since you were over. :) Stay far, far, away!

You are a mean person Myles,
Now I have to go back and hate my life all over again

I have an old friend here with many Reel to a Reel players in very good condition, do you want me to get pictures and $$?

He was an studio editor and have many master tapes

I think could be a good person for you to reach to

Well they're crazy. :) Tell me how a table that has 10-30X worse speed stability can sound the same? It's impossible implemented correctly.

Knowing HW, there's no way he would put out a product that didn't sound better. It's that same old sniping that goes on against VPI. Just look at Audiogon. :(

In fact, VPI notwithstanding, it's that sniping and rumor mill that makes this hobby disgusting. :(

Yup....but you know how it goes. I look forward to hearing it at RMAF. I have two VPI tables, so you're preaching to the converted. I'm a big fan. I think my Classic 3/SDS runs with many $20k tables.

I'm curious what mixed reports you've heard about the Classic Direct.

No one who has heard the Classic Direct here has complained and in fact a few went and bought it. The acid test for any table in my mind is how it compares to tape. Sure there are tables that "sound" nice but what are they adding or subtracting from the music? Believe me that the Direct/Atlas combination gives you a real taste of the tape eg. dynamics esp. in the low end, harmonic completeness, soundstaging and neutrality. Perhaps they are complaining more now about the cartridge or their phono section?
sorry i heard the same from some very trustworthy people. . i live in vpi land very close to them, everyone around here has vpi tables and are huge fans. as am i, ive owned 5 different ones. and only dont own one now because im over the unipivot arm and bloated bass and dark sound that has always been vpi signature sound. dont get me wrong i loved an got used to the sound. just got bored of it and wanted something new. several of my vpi buddies have been to vpi recently and tried to justify the direct. there are a ton of dealers around me as well, most of who i know well. none of them are excited about this. and yes the direct is being called a classic3 with a $20000 bill taped to it. not by me.
but with that said i personally never heard it. and i would never say that about anything that ive never heard. i just said mixed reports to keep my opinion out of it. and be nice about it.

edit: btw the hrx with graham arm and lyra cart is still among the best setups i ever heard.

A dealer in my area has a Brinkmanship Balance on Agon:

Same dealer has a Kronos Sparta in house as well.;). Will be going to his shop when I travel down this path...

Maybe these are not hi-end enough for you but I know I'm getting one of these sooner or later :)

Steve, I think that 'dark' sound that you refer to isn't necessarily a VPI issue but a function of any table that uses a metacrylate platter. Those platters came into play years ago courtesy of Goldmund when a lot of gear and cartridges were bright and the plastic served as a good complement. I think the metacrylate's signature is big bass and soft upper octaves. Now the other lucite like platters have the opposite issue and are lighter on the bottom and more extended on the top. Most of that issue cleared up at least in my experience when VPI switched to the all Al platter (remember HW used an Al platter on his original HW- 19 table but dropped it when HP panned it) and the new Classic Direct takes that another step forward.

That said, the Merrill is a great table also. Ever think of putting the Triplanar on your Merrill?

Try to avoid the Reel to a Reel from Myles, is depressing good.
Makes you want to sell your gear and start a new hobby

:D
I can really relate to that reaction; after hearing some tape playback at AXPONA my heart sank thinking that I've never heard any other source sound as realistic or as emotionally engaging. I then started thinking about purchasing one of the United Home Audio decks, but I couldn't rationalize the expense since so much of the music I love is not generally available on tape and what is costs so much more than other mediums. However as a true reference quality source I have to admit that tape is the best.

yes ive talked with Jeff at length, about the triplanar and new armboard, and keeping my arm also for its quick switch capability and how i can set it up for easy arm changes. it is in the near future. thanks. i love george merrills theories and dead quietness of this table because of it. is quietness even a word?? lol.
but i still have a never dying love of my old vpi tnt 4 and i might just grab one one day to play with and keep around.
