Can you describe the new plan ?
We been at your house and you have lots of Lps .
Are you going all digital ? :D

I'm willing to make a trip to help you in that hassle and bring back your collection home

Myles Apartment is a dream for Audio because He doesn't have any neighbors complaining for the noise
and thats is a privilege in NYC
 
Myles...how about a hint. DIY flat packs, custom build or artisan commissioned?

First to admit the downside of vinyl. Space & weight.

My preference is out of site & out of mind. The IKEA Besta workstation & storage unit is now fully loaded. I have converted built in wardrobes with exacting shelf heights. After that, I don't know.

Those of you with many thousands of LPs must have insanely good storage systems in place?

Yes, have around 10,000 records and about 100 15 ips tapes (each album consists of two reels). Would love to own my place and have built in record shelves as I've seen some audiophiles do.

Up to now had gone the custom made rack route. (Save for the living room cabinet that just replaced.) Very sturdy, good materials and the first two cabinets have lasted me close to twenty years with no signs of giving out.

The issue was that the last two custom made racks that I had made six or so years ago cost me $2300 each. Again while nice, just didn't with the anticipated increase in price, want to lay out six bills for new cabinets. Looked around and the options were limited. Yes, I know many go the Ikea route but their cabinet's dimensions just didn't work in the space available. So ended up going to Gothic Cabinet Craft in NYC and had these made. Not quite as good material as my previous racks but still sturdy. Not to mention the pair ran me $2300 with finishing, taxes and delivery!

And having had the pleasure of visiting him a couple of years ago, I can attest that he lives in a nice 'hood!
 
Speaking of new record shelves...My father who is 85 wants me to take his entire collection of LPs which he claims is around 3,000. The bummer for me is that my father is an opera lover and the vast majority of his collection is opera singers/operas. Opera is not my genre. I agreed to take his collection and so far have hauled half of his collection back to my house where it currently sits in the shipping boxes on a a pallet.

I had two record shelf cabinets made by someone I know at work. Each cabinet is 80" tall and is made from maple veneer plywood. I paid $995 for both cabinets and that included delivery. They were supposed to go in my stereo room against the back wall (which would have been good sound-wise), but they were too damn tall to make it downstairs and make a 90 degree turn into my room. I had to settle for leaving them upstairs in the room over my stereo room. Here is a picture of the cabinets:

Myles-Hopefully I will have some of the opera jewels that you listed in your Reference LP thread.
 
Mark, I'm sure you will find at least a few jewels in that collection. Opera isn't my genre also, but listen to a good number of your Dad's LPs. You may find you'll develop a taste for it.

Congrats either way!
 
So what ru doing for shelves ? I love Boltz. Infinitely expandable and never sag.
