New photos of Randy's system ...

One quick update. I sold the Benchmark since it was being under used and added a Woo Audio dedicated headphone amplifier. I also have a couple different tubes on the way to play around with rolling a little.

Some system changes are coming. Listed in Signature.... photos are a couple weeks out :)....

Yupper.... you got it :)...

Might be a good idea to move the ARC amp. Was looking at the rack, it will be overflowing with amplifiers :D.

My current thinking.... the Quicksilver as the mains.... tube monoblocks, 80 - 90 watts depending on tubes, class A, using KT150 (and my Gold Lion KT88 will also work)... the First Watt for SS flavor, and to use if having background music, listening to FM, etc. No use putting hours on tubes in these situations... of course the Woo for headphones.... this leaves the nice classic ARC as the odd man out :(.... nice beefy little amplifier though... the power switch is a little flaky but does work. EJ said he will fix it up for me :)....

Oh, and my gorgeous MC monitors are finding a new home... they will be really enjoyed. I will miss them but I just got to have KEF :)....

I have received both the KEF and the Quicksilver amps. The KEF's are breaking in nicely. The Quicksilver's sound great, however one has a slight, but noticeable hum through the speaker when there is no music playing. It does not appear to interfere with the music, but as Mike Sanders from Quicksilver put it (after he listened to the sound over the phone), it will not hurt anything it is just annoying. Still determining the best method of proceeding. Mike states that the amp should be dead quite like the other one is. I would hate to have to send an amp out for service after just receiving it.

Anyway, here are some updated photos. I am really enjoying how the system is coming along. An Audio Club friend came over yesterday and was saying the system resolves the music so much that it was giving him goose bumps!

Randy, your system looks terrific. The new speakers are gorgeous. Keep us posted on the sound.

Looks good Randy. Mike didn't think that either the AT7 or AU7 could be the noisy culprit? Easy enough to find out by swapping one at a time side to side and see if the noise moves. Would be an easy and cheap fix.

Hey Jack, yea I have switched tubes, channels, etc. A friend even brought some other extremely high end power cords over to make sure my Wireworlds were not the issue. The slight hum is definitely the amp. Rob has found the original purchase and the amps are only 2 years old. Therefore they are still under warranty. He has e-mailed Mike Sanders to request service on the one amp. So it is a matter of it working itself out.

They are sweet sounding amps though :)...

Dan came over with those power cords yesterday and spent about four hours listening. He was blown away by the amps with the KEF's :D....

Mike's a good guy, I'm sure he will get it worked out. Probably just a resistor or cap out of spec. He's not too far from you in Stockton so shouldn't take long.

Randy.......Sure didn't take long to fill that second rack with gear. Good thing you were encouraged to purchase two racks. Your sound system and the new KEF's look excellent.

Long time, no see.

That "small" system of yours continues to grow every time I see it. Looks great as usual. So how do those little subs keep up with the new 700's?

Well I only have the one KEF sub now. It does great at filling in the very bottom. The KEF's produce a ton of base and really don't need a sub. I think I am going to be putting the ARC and First Watt on the market. Both great amps, but they won't get used a lot moving forward. Especially since I will add a Wyred 4 Sound statement nextGEN when I can convince them to make me one up :).... so will end up with the Quicksilver and nextGEN for now.

Yeah, sort of like my setup. The Martin Logan's still play fullrange (well, they're high passed at 16 Hz). The sub is low passed at 40 Hz. The ML's give me 90% of the bass in the system. The JL only kicks in for that last 10%, usually only on pipe organ and some electronic music. And of course, when we watch the occasional movie. Most of the time, it's just sitting idle.

Are you running those R700's only off of the Quicksilver amps or are you bi-amping them? Have you tried them bi-amped?
