New Magico Speakers

Laugh now buddy, I can hear your clock ticking from here.

I had no idea they started sending those things when you turn 50. I was pretty surprised to get one. And then my cheap side started fighting with my "I'm not that old" side, because they have pretty good discounts. I may drop AAA for AARP.

Anyway, back to your originally scheduled program. I still think the Q5 is old, and I'm still disappointed that this speaker is not its replacement. But it's interesting that they're bringing back the M Designation, using the Q7 driver array with the M baffle idea. Very intriguing.

I've been told the Q5 replacement is well underway.

Whatever it is I bet it will be a winner and category defining product. I listened to my S5s last night and was experiencing nirvana

Not sure. If the new speaker costs less, the same knuckleheads will declare it inferior. I remember declaring early on - a year ago - that the S5 was better than the Q5 (http://audioshark.org/magico-61/magico-s5-loudspeaker-hi-fi-1900.html).

People scoffed: "how is that possible? You're comparing a $30,000 speaker to a $65,000 speaker."

Well, a year later, not many of those same folks are still clinging to that argument. They've all but buried the Q5.

It's not bad as you said, but it's not a $65,000 marvel. The S series is an evolution of the Q series IMO. Whether Magico intended that or not.

Even writhin the S series, I felt that the S3 was a teeny tiny evolution of the S5. Specifically, the improved midrange.

I'm excited to learn about the new speaker being announced Monday. I like the looks of it (from the little we can see).

It seems to me that Magico is a company that strives to make every new speaker just a little better.

It is true that each new Magico product, regardless of the series and/or price, has some advance features over older ones, but the overall Qs are quite superior to the Ss. This is coming from an S5 owner that, unfortunately, has a very good friend with a Q5...

I completely, totally and respectfully disagree. I've heard all the Q's - more than once - and on multiple gear - and they lack a single ounce of musicality. They do all the audiophile stuff, but....boy......are they BORING! They have no soul. The S series is a better musical step IMO. I bet the M advances this even further. But that is still TBD.

Remember, just because something costs more - doesn't make it better. That's the test of a TRUE audiophile and what ultimately separates the wheat from the chaff.

Well, in this case, unfortunately, what is more expensive is clearly better. The Q5 is simply more neutral then the S5. If you call it boredom, just add a colored amp or a tube front end, and you got yourself “musicality”. Remember, the less “soul” a speaker have, the better it is. I spent a lot of time listening to both the S5 and the Q5 (both well set up), there is no contest.

So did I - and you are right - there is no contest. The S5 is better. :)

We can agree to disagree....

The new M series seems to marry the curved enclosure of the S series with the curved baffle of the Q series. Drivers? The body is simpler and less labor intensive and hence cheaper to produce than Q series and dropping in the curved baffle of the Q series (which is simply machined from a slab of aluminum from of their CNC machines) is easy enough to do and delivers minimized diffraction effects. Probably price it in between the Q and S series and you deliver the "best of both worlds" at a slightly better price than the Q series (if they are smart with their pricing strategy). Just guessing but that's how I would read into this new line of Magico speakers.

The speakers, the gear, ...have no soul; the artists (some), their music have. It's just a function to know which (speaker matched with the right gear) is a better soul reproducer, for ourselves (oneself), our own soul.

No two people are touched the same, in their soul. There is no absolute, only sound vibrations that resonate in the human's chords. ...Ears to emotional impact; inner soul.

The higher/deeper we go into our own soul, the more personal/interstitial becomes that journey.

These new lines look nothing like simple to me. Look at the thickness of the top plate, and if you saw a Q up close, you would realize that these curved front baffles are anything but easy. I also do not see how they can squeeze another price point between the S and the Q. Cheap(er) this will not be…

i'm a proud owner of the Q5, which was purchased after extensive listening to all models many times. assuming you have enough power to drive the Q5 (they are power hungry beasts), they'll come to life and eat an S5 for breakfast. it's important to recognize that the s series versus the Q5 are operating at very different efficiencies. don't come to a Q5 with a tube amp or something that isn't ready to tackle a 85db/w/m type of load. i'm using two devialet monoblocks which are more than ample. and yes, regarding above, they're super neutral. and for the size, they'll drive dynamics and low frequency energy in a large room unlike anything else their size. i've never heard bass clarity from any speaker like the Q5. only thing better is the Q7!
