New Magico speakers arriving 04/2015!

I have heard three pairs of S5 in three different settings. I can not attest to whether or not they were optimally set up. Two were at Magico dealers and one was at Ian's. They are very good speakers, though I personally happen to prefer the voicing of the Q3, which I have also heard in three different settings.

To me, the M Project in Ian's system sounded better than both the S5 and Q3 even before he bypassed the transformers. Now after hearing them the other day with Al M., I think they are MUCH better sounding than both the S5 and Q3. There is simply no comparison. Are they ideally set up in Ian's system now? I don't think so, but they are much closer and in my opinion only, and in my admittedly limited experience, they are the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. They are the first large speaker system that I have heard play both large and small scale material in equally convincing ways. The M Project is a real achievement.

I think much of the great sound is the result of the very successful pairing with the Pass XA160.8 amplifiers. I love my system, but I would really prefer to listen to Ian's system every day. Just with my analog front end:D

I've owned the S5's and heard the M Projects at Axpona. As good as the S5's were technically, the M's are simply in another league sonically, technically and definitely aesthetically.

I hope the M is a better speaker since it cost 4X the S5. However, I will bet, figuratively, the S7 will get 90% of the way there to the M at 50% of the cost. Being top dog is oh so fleeting in this hobby.

I agree Bud.....law of diminishing returns. Just like the Grand Utopia's are in another league over my Scala V2's, but I still consider my Scala V2's a great speaker in their own right in their price range.

+1 to all that.

I would imagine that picture was provided by Magico for the review, and staged to look how they want it to look. Any internal cabinet stuffing used I'd also imagine would be purposefully omitted for the picture to better show the cabinet internals, so I'd say it's inconclusive.

From my own experience FEA'ing the internals of cabinets to find an ideal shape for minimal backwave reflection, I can say that shape isn't it, and that some stuffing will be needed. Not saying that's a bad thing at all, just how it is. Even our FEA'd cabinet internals cannot completely eliminate the backwave, light stuffing is needed in strategic locations. I would be shocked if there was no cabinet stuffing added.

There is also some additional stuffing apart from Black Hole 5 material. At least there is in the S1:

On the S5, thay also use Dynamat on the connecting rods.

Denim insulation, nice choice. I use the same in my speakers.
Thanks for your input guys, very interesting!

?? I don't follow. There are no elevators...?
Floyd, I believe Bud is referring to the silver 'mystery boxes' connected to the speaker cables. Every exotic cable has to have a mystery box, lol!

LOL. Somebody is ingenious. Check out the rear speaker cable elevators. :)

Are you referring to those two white flat plastic or metal things under the speaker cables? They seem to have something to do with supporting the advertising screen. They are there, so they can be used to elevate the speaker cable off the carpet by 1/2".

it seems that the top and bottom are separated physically. I guess the amp is the Centaur MkII (?)

I much prefer the narrower front baffle of the M Project to the new S7. The latter just looks fat from the front, IMO. The two panels in the rear are pretty interesting. I wonder why they are so thick.

+ 2. The M Pro's are par excellence. These S7's must be great sounding speakers, though i'm personally looking forward to a future S5 Mk II which I think will be inevitable given the release of the S7 & could well become the sweet spot in the Magico lineup.
