Longtime lurker, first-time poster. By day I work in cybersecurity, so I spend a lot of time thinking about networks and systems. That’s partly why digital audio fascinates me: streamers, DACs, network audio, and the endless Ethernet cable debates.

I’m still early in the hobby and currently running a pair of Edifier R1280DB powered bookshelf speakers, a FiiO K3 DAC, and Sennheiser HD 560S headphones, streaming from my PC (Tidal and some FLAC files). My goals are a first proper 2-channel setup with a good integrated amp and passive speakers, better imaging, and some basic room treatment, since my room is small and echoey.

I’m happy to answer any computer or network questions in return, and I’d love advice on the best budget path from powered speakers to a real amp-and-speaker pairing, and whether to upgrade the speakers or the amp first.

Your beginner 2.0 system sounds fun. It should not be hard once you establish a budget. You can find an integrated that includes a streaming DAC within that will improve on your portable.

Searching the used market (local sales, Audiogon, etc.) can extend your reach.

There are many cool room treatments available now with the classic fabric finish, or picture, or patterned diffraction front. I have used GIK acoustics, but there are many others.

Hello & welcome

If you have a budget that helps to narrow things down. If any stores or other ways to listen to other gear you should do that to get a feel for the type of sound you like.

To give an idea Yamaha has integrated amp from $400 and up. I really like the sound of Advance Paris. In powered speakers with DAC and features the Kef LS are popular. So many options take your time and learn and listen to as much as possible.

Welcome and tell us more specifics about your room. Speakers and the room they reside in is top priority IMO..........
