volks...congrats on your new 'table. Do you change records while the platter is spinning or shut the 'table off and do you use a clamp or weight?

Doug...congrats on your 'table. Love the looks and bet it sounds amazing. I asked volks this question about his deck. Do you use a weight or clamp and can you change lp's while the platter is spinning or turn the deck off?

Dave, the mat on the Concept doesn't really allow me to flip records while it's spinning so I have to turn it off. It's made of rubber and would probably put surface scratches on the vinyl.

I don't use a clamp right now but I do have one album that the label is pretty thick on one side so when I try to play that side it doesn't spin right. I get a lot of speed variations which makes for interesting listening! So yes, I will be getting a clamp to use. I'm open to suggestions for what to get...

I only use a record weight if I have a warped record (which is rare) .

You can spend ALOT or you can spend very little on DIY.

I am not a big advocate though because I am always concerned about the additional weight and wear and tear on the motor. You have to remember, Belt drive TT's (unlike direct drive motors) are very low torque. This is why a good spin to get them going before starting is essential (as well as saving the belt). Adding weight just puts more stress on that motor as the motor does not vary speed like a DD drive does. It is set to move at a specific RPM so that's all it will do. But to do it will have to work harder..sort of like giving your car gas with a trailer on...takes more TORQUE to achieve the same speed.

I always go for under 10 oz..just enough to flatten the vinyl a bit and that really doesn't deal with outer warps very well..only general warpage.

Some people use a clamp that presses down on the spindle and grips in place. No weight and holds firmly. Same issue though. Only holds down the center so depending on the warp, may do nothing. That's why they make outer rings too...

For me, way overkill. I just don't keep or buy warped records. :exciting:

J.A. MICHELL RECORD CLAMP - Fits most turntables

Thanks Rob. I'm only looking for something that will add enough mass so the record doesn't slip. For this particular record I'm using an isolation cup and ball that weighs about 45 grams and it's enough to keep the record spinning right. It's not an ideal solution though, which is why I'm looking at a proper weight.

Doug...thanks my friend. You've got a great 'table. Like my Rega, be careful with weights and clamps. Like Rob said, give it a spin then start up.

Hi Dave...............I shut the table off and change the record.....i currently do not use a clamp or weight.

Doug, help me understand your record slippage. Are you saying while its on the platter, playing as it should, it slips? The only way I could envision that is if the center hole of the record was too tight and not allowing it to make full platter contact...you said you have one with a thick label ? Hmmm...

Want a nice record weight? Easy to use, costs next to nothing and its not too heavy ? Okay..all I have to ask is this..can you drill a small 8mm hole ? If you can this is it

Amazon.com: A&R Sports Ice Hockey Practice Puck, Black - 4 Pack: Sports & Outdoors

Weight is 6oz, does no damage and does not resonate...I am not kidding.
