Hello all, I want to add a new transport to my system: Rowland Aeris DAC, Rowland Chorus Preamp, Rowland 625 amp, Revel Salon 2 speakers, all IC'S are Audience au24 SE including digital, power cords all Audience AU24, 2x pair Cardas Clear speaker cables in shot gun. Current transport is a Bryston BCDP used as digital out t DAC

The system is well broken in and plays in a large 28'X 40" room. Except for the need of a Rowland 825 (hoping) it sound very organic, musical and very nice. I am an early adopter of JRDG, Cardas and Revel speakers.

Transport options: Given my budget & needs I think an Esoteric P 05 would be a good unit to consider as an upgrade. I do not however know precisely what to expect w/ the Esoteric transport in sonic terms. The mechanics are impressive and it is an very nice bit of engineering. Is it realistic to expect better low frequencies, lower noise floor, greater detail, refined musicality etc? Any other transport options I might want to consider?

Your input is appreciated
Happy thanksgiving!

28x40 ? Wow. You can have a little band concert in your room. :). I don't know much about the Esoteric stuff so can't comment. However I'm sure some one will chime in soon.

Yes it's a very well built house with 2"x 8" framing w/ sheet rock screwed to 3/4 " plywood walls. The floor is 1" Oak screwed to 3/4" ply that is screwed to hardwood screeds suspending it 2" above a massive slab. I designed it expressively as a music room/living space w/ non parallel irregular planer ceilings that extend at places to 21'. On good source material the system truly plays the acoustic space and w/ the sliding 16' pocket doors open its actually 71' long. This is a space that can support and unfold a very long low frequency sound wave. I have waited all my music loving life for this one! Problem is I really need the bigger rowland 825 to push the Revels but alas I must wait for this!

Hi Mark! :hi:

* Just a CD transport (SACD too)?

Have you look at some Marantz, Sony, Naim, with top-notch Philips VAM transports?
...Pioneer, TEAC Esoteric SACD/CD transport, (Esoteric P-70 or most recent)? ...VRDS disc-clamping transport.

Esoteric is on the right path for top transports.

A Trinity transport?

P.S. The Trinity DAC uses sixteen (16) Burr-Brown PCM-1704 DACs! ....Hi-ha!

Thanks all- FYI I have a very extensive collection of CD's (5,000+) and little motivation or time to transfer the collection to digital storage. My record collection just as large w/ several TTables. The transport I need would ideally be mechanically well isolated, sturdy & have several digital out options. I don't really play high res files but plan to move to a server for this application. Sounds like the Esoteric transports w/ the uber mechanism would do the trick. Happy holiday all!

You got it; for your particular application the Esoterics are it, I think. ...Solid transports.

* There is also the Oppo BDP-105 tube ModWright. ...With separate power supply and tubes upgrade. ...Roughly $3,000 +/-
Some people prefer the sound of it more as compared to other digital rigs in the $20,000-30,000+ range.
But here it's the Sound that I'm talking about, not the Transport.

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Black Friday, and Happy Holidays!

PS. Slightly off topic - after reading this thread I came to the conclusion that people on this forum have by far the best avatars :)

Nice to see someone who is brave enough to go against the media server dictatorship - we are humans not computer extensions, if you feel better with CDs you should go on using them, not change because it is fashionable.

However a matching transport for your DAC is more than a CD spinner - it will have a characteristic sound signature. As you have Rowland equipment perhaps you should also contact the factory asking for advice.

I was sometime ago at an exhibition where a music server was being used to feed a Metronome C2a DAC - when a CD was put in the Kalista Transport people smiled and started listening to music!

microstrip - there are bad servers (and bad USB input implementations) as there are bad transports.

If the USB input in the Metronome C2a DAC is as bad as the one in the C-8 I tried - then I'm not really surprised.

If the USB input is done right - it has the potential to sound much superior to any of the SPDIF inputs.

The C2a does not have an USB input. Did you listen to the C8 with the Kalista SE?

I do not care if things have potential to sound better or worst - for me the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Perhaps I was not lucky with music servers, but until now the best sound reproduction I listened to in 16/44.1 was always using a top CD transport.
