I recently received an invitation to contribute an essay to the National Recording Registry. The Registry, maintained by the National Recording Preservation Board of the U.S. Library of Congress, chooses certain recordings each year that reflect the richness of the American recorded sound heritage, to preserve that legacy for future generations.
There were many great recordings inducted into the Registry that caught my eye, but the choice of my first piece was easy: Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced.
Here is a link to the essay as it appears on the National Registry. It was a privilege to write about this timeless, groundbreaking record, which was and remains hugely influential, and is still enjoyed by countless listeners more than four decades after its release.

Congratulations Bill, that's amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Congratulations and we'll done!

Great choice of subject matter.

I still vividly recall the circumstances when I first heard Purple Haze.

And when I got the news of his passing.

Deathless legacy, though.

Bill, enjoyed the article. Also enjoyed your Jeff Gold articles on Collectibility and Sonics. Very informative. I will definitely be getting Jeff's book.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing.

Did they print the year wrong? It says it's from 2005.

The album was inducted into the National Registry in 2005. Believe it or not, no one had written an essay on it. The essay was just published on the Registry a week ago.
