Hi folks, I'm pretty happy with my new system and I'm waiting patiently for my Magico S5's to break in. With that said, I'm fairly open minded to the opinions of the very knowledgeable people here. If you had my system, what would you consider the weakest link? I'm interested in your opinions! Thanks!

just going by whats in your sig.....vitus rp101 and a good turntable.lol. you live in nyc. you can throw a rock an hit 10 of the best record shops in the world. im just sayin!! :D i heard the vitus phonostage is off the hook good, like all their gear, but i never personally listened to it.

Jim - I like the fact that you have addressed clean power with the Audience AR12TSS. Without seeing a picture of your listening room, I can't comment on room treatments for possible problem areas. Gear wise, I would say sources. You know I'm a huge fan of the Lumin and on my S5's, it really adds some body and smoothness. But like Steve said, a modest vinyl rig would also give you some fun.

Last but not least, I am finding more and more that the S5's needs some warmth and body. Some feel its more sweetness that is needed and like Constellation. I have not heard the RS-100 (only the SS-101), so I can't comment. I do remember the SS-101 being my favorite to date on the S5's, so I would think the RS-100 is close.

Thanks Mike, BIG price difference between my Vitus gear and Constellation. I'm thinking I may get the biggest "bang for the buck" changing ICs and speaker cables. I've read Vitus is fairly sensetive to these items.

Yes, VERY big. Cables with warmth and body like TaraLabs might not be too bad. But I honestly think you will get a bigger ROI from other areas like sources. If not a Lumin, then definitely something like the EAR DACute4 and matching CD player. I think some tubes in there would go a long long way.

Spending your money, but in a responsible manner, I will supplement the Oppo with a Bryston BDP-1/2 digital file player, and an Auralic Vega DAC, with a Shunyata Alpha Digital PC for the Bryston, and an Alpha Analog for the DAC. Later, we can upgrade to a Shunyata Triton power conditioner, and Shunyata cables all around.

Or, you can send the S5s to me. :)

although i do agree shunyata is a great company with great products, and i have never used any of their cables. but i would stick it out with the audience conditioner. a superb product never in need of replacement. imho.

Thanks Blue Fox. I considered the Bryston products once. They are good. I did quite a bit of research and found the Aurender to have far better reviews. and it doesn't need an external drive. My RD-100 is actually a DAC with preamp capabilities. I've had complete Shunyata looms with a Triton. Nice products, especially the power cords, the speaker cables and ICs, not to my liking. The Audience AR12TSS seems to be pretty good so far. I like the fact that it is "star grounded". I don't understand why any upper-end conditioner isn't. As far as the Lumin is concerned, I don't know what it would ad to my set up. If someone could/would explain that, I might consider one. Mike, you're AWESOME, and you're probably right.but NO tubes for me !!! Thanks!!!

This thread made me look at my two systems. System A is my vintage system (location = bedroom)- no weak links really, it's good just as it is. System B is my modern system (double duty - Music and occasional HT) - there were many weak links in it looking back. but today there are only two weak links remaining 1) Receiver (which I am working on replacing with a new one and a supplemental amp) and 2) the room - unfortunately there is nothing that can be done except to move. Even the acoustical engineer that looked at it told me to forget it and not waste my money on any further treatment. (I just put up some panels behind the sofa). It really is a very poorly designed room. Perhaps someday I'll be able to move into a better place...I hope. (Even the kitchen is very poorly designed). The bedrooms and bathrooms are good though).

Jim:

IMO speaker cables and interconnects have less impact than power cables. If you're happy with your Audience conditioner and PCs I'd look to spend money somewhere other than cables (provided you're not using crappy SCs or I/Cs). I'm not familiar with Vitus (other than with ridiculously sexy pictures of their insides) but, since it seems you're happy with their sound signature, why not slowly move up the line? Most dealers will give you a generous trade-in if you're moving up.

Yes Mike, I agree. Maybe the Oppo upgrade. As per Michael's suggestion, normally a perfect idea, but in the case of Vitus, my RI-100 is 300 per in class a/b. I would have to quadruple the $$$ probably to get 50 per channel in class A. Mine is the only class A/B amp they make I believe.

So, I just got off the phone with the great people at Modwright. This would be a great upgrade if I were using the Oppo as my dac. The reason I purchased the RD-100 is to use the dac that is in it. It is modular, so as dacs get better, it's an easy swap out for the new one.

Jim...

Vitus RD-100, Vitus RS-100, Aurender S10, Oppo BDP-105,Audience AR12TSS, Audience AU24SE cables, Magico S5s.

Are you kidding me ? Are you asking for a weakest link ??? Shame on you ;) Man you are so greedy. I would love to have some of your Vitus gears.

I really like the Vitus gear. Thank you. I just want to get the most out of it. I just spoke with someone who is very prominent in the industry and he is making me a very special set of double run speaker cables that I'm going to try. It should be fun. I'll let you know in a few weeks how this works out. If it's half as good as he says, it should be a major improvement that I'll share. Paul, I'm a huge fan of DeVore, made right here in NYC at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. I heard some 88's I think with a Rogers tube amp. The most holographic sound I've ever heard. Enjoy!

Personally, I like your system as is. Maybe a source change as some suggested.

Do you have isolation? If not, you are missing out on a substantial part of your systems capability!

Kev, I agree. I would like to explore Stillpoints for my speakers. Thanks.

Jim - Magico recommends against it. Reports from friends who have tried Stillpoints under their S5's and results were not ideal.

Now Stillpoints under your gear? Reports are positive. I have yet to try that voodoo - but plan on it.
