My New Lumin

It's back!:derf:

It indeed was a network problem, caused by a momentary power glitch. The IP address has been changed to a static one, so hopefully this will not occur again. I'm back to Audio Nirvana!

Thanks to all.

Good deal Tom !

Streamers that I've had usually don't have problems, it always seems network related.

One time with the Linn I could not get the damn thing to work, I tried everything, it ended up being the router :bonkers:

I took some advice from a couple of friends and bought an Apple router, I have not had a problem since.

Looks like Jock had the answer. Yes, it's the router that assigns each device an IP address, and different routers will assign addresses in different ways. Some will remember which address a device had and assign the same address back to that device even after startup/reboot. Sounds like the Apple may be doing that.

So I had to see what all the fuss was about :).

Very heavy for its sleek size due to it being milled from a solid piece of aluminum. Anyways, getting my NAS set up at the moment. Will post initial and follow up impressions shortly.

I've read somewhere that there is a new Lumin comin'?
...With four ESS Sabre32 Reference DACs, or sixteen DACs per channel (2 x 8-channel DAC chips per each L & R channel)!

Yup! I reported on this at CES (guess no one read that!). The S1 is the new one. I spoke to Li and he felt the A1 still sounds best, but for those who must have double DSD (for all 12 titles :) ) - then they will have that option.

Mike - Can you recall if it will have dig inputs?

Thx!

Mike - no digital inputs....no need really. It has a digital output (BNC) though.

The Lumin in black sure would look good in your rack! :).

Though about it. If the DAC is is so good, I fail to understand why no dig inputs. I use more than one digital device in my system.

Thx!

The designers feel that a streamer should not be used as a standalone DAC. There are plenty of DAC's on the market if one wants to do that. The Lumin is meant to eliminate boxes upon boxes which create noise through RFI and EM and design compromises.

What would you plug into the Lumin if you could? A CD player? That defeats the purpose of having a streamer/network music player. The purpose is to rip your collection and enjoy all your digital music at the touch of a button on your iPad. A squeezebox or similar? Again, the Lumin works great with MOG, Spotify, etc.

I would say, if someone wants a DAC, there is no shortage. But if someone wants a network music player which reduces boxes, sounds better than any DAC/PC combo I've heard and brings digital ease and sonic bliss - then a network music player is the way to go. Linn, NAIM, Lumin - they are all great and I've heard all of them. The Lumin is my favorite for looks, functionality, price and most importantly, sound.

Hey, I seriously don't make a dime associated with anything in any which way or form with Lumin.....if people buy one - great, if they don't - that's fine tool. I simply negotiated hard with the good folks at Lumin to offer special pricing for Audioshark members as an incentive for people to make the leap. Myself, I just love their product and am delighted to be off the digital merry go round.

I know that Linn has said that putting a digital input into the Klimax would degrade the sound of the Klimax even when not used. Not sure if that is true or just marketing on Linn's part.

Naim put one into theirs. ??????

Doesn't the Lumin sound a little better? If so, then I think opening up the unit to a digital input could indeed degrade the sound.

AirPlay can be a little wonky for me with frequent drop outs. I'd love a digital input for my Sonos but not at the expense of sound quality. I still love to stream but until I can get AirPlay to work perfectly I'm quite content to use the Lumin for my ripped music and DSD files and my EAR/Sonus combination for streaming background music.
