You ideally need Ethernet from your main router to the Lumin and to your NAS. You then need wifi so the Lumin and NAS and iPad are all on the same home network.
I have a CAT5 running from my Fios cable to the 10 port switch in my upstairs music room. Then I plug my NAS, Lumin and Apple Airport Express (which acts as my wifi) into the switch.
Hope this makes sense.

Streaming is really so turnkey, its obvious why many will chose this option...plug and forget! Good on Mike for arranging that group buy.

What model Lumin is everyone getting? The original A1 (top of the line, I believe)?
I know there are three newer models out that were unveiled at CES. I think they are all below the A1, but I can't even find the other models on the Lumin website.
Anyone know the basic differences between models.?

Rance - the group buy is for the A1 (the original). The new models will not be out for a few months. There will be an S1 which will be similar to the A1, except it will have the Sabre DAC chipset which is able to process double DSD. All the other models will retain the Wolfson DAC chipset. IMO - if you don't care about double DSD (there are only a handful of titles out), then stick with the A1. I believe the Wolfson DAC is superior to any other DAC brand.

Before sending it back, what are the main issues? Maybe we can collectively help.

First welcome to AS. I was not familiar with loading my NAS with the latest Java and MinimServer so I hired a local IT guy and he did it remotely. Cost me 75 bucks and took 30 minutes. After that the lumin App software found all my files . I can really relate to your frustration . You've invested so greatly I really hope you get to hear the fruits of your efforts.

Don't give up! I'm sure people here can help and I will say I'm impressed that the Lumin rep was willing to drive out and help from that far away - that's impressive!

Setting up a NAS drive on your network, getting all your music on it, installing the necessary programs (usually Minimserver and Java) and making sure Your Lumin app is communicating with everything takes some skill for sure. Many of us rely on a computer expert to come out and do these things for us. As mentioned, well worth the expense for what will likely be only a small amount of time.
Once it's up and running you'll be glad you moved beyond a CD player.

Another option would be to ship your NAS etc to the IT guy have him set up the server part. And then it's pretty easy just to plug it back in.
Geoffrey, an alternative is to try the "simplest" config I posted earlier (no NAS, no Java, no Minim server install). It would take only ~15 min for music to flow. You can then figure out a more comprehensive config while listening.
