MW real 101 setup and initial thoughts

Steve the 101.2 sounds right up your alley. The two arm capability and the speed strobe printed on the platter are things that you've talked about in the past. Time to upgrade!

actually i like where the speed strobe is now. its on the center of the platter and also on the ring clamp, and i dont want black because i like the silver, and i dont want the new motor cause i love the detached motor which you can put away from the table. all i want is the ability to add another arm. i might have to call Jeff and see if he has any info on this . thanks doug!!!

I didn't realize there was a speed strobe on the platter of yours, I thought it was just on the ring clamp that you're not using. My bad! I imagine Jeff will chime in here when he has some info for you.

Steve, did you find out anything about the new version 101.2? I don't see anything yet on their website.
yes i talked to Jeff and i also got an email from my questions to george merrill. the 101 can not be upgraded to a 101.2 they are basically the same table and are the same price as well. i can upgrade to the liquid dampened motor for $350, but i dont see the point because the motor is already away from the table and vibration has nothing to do with the table itself, and i can get a 3ft cord for my motor for a few $$ an put it on a different shelf if i wanted to.
jeff mentioned that if i want a triplanar arm(which i do) to run a big time cartridge, all i need is another armboard and to secure it and set it up once , then to switch back and fourth between arms is just a matter of 3 screws, and very fast and easy. so i am happy where im at and will keep this for now. that triplanar lists at $6200 yikes!! and of course the cartridge choices i would even be able to think about affording would be, ca da vinci, benz lps, shelter harmony, a stretch would be an etna.
so im thinking the smartest thing for me to do is get a couple new headshells for the ortofon arm including at least one Arche to test it out. and pick up a grado, a good mono, an spu, and maybe a good used cartridge or 2.lol. first i need a phonostage with more settings and options than my present one. but then again ill find out tomorrow but the cary 300b's,hovland,and cadenza black might float my boat for awhile.lol.
thanks for caring doug, im so glad we find the same stuff interesting!!!! lmao!!!

Steve, I care about you man and I'm here whenever you need a shoulder to lean on... :P

But seriously... what goes around comes around. I remember you saying way back when you were still waiting for this table to come in that you were thinking about getting a couple headshells so that you can rotate different carts in and out. I think getting a nice mono cart would be ideal for all those mono jazz recordings that you'll be buying now!

lol!!!thanks doug!!! mono jazz? i need some of those. i need to collect how many records to justify a mono cartridge?? i have 2. i think i need more to make it work. i might have more in the never listened to pile. but i dont know cause i never listen to them.lol. i was thinking of getting an spu and a mono. but what about a mono spu???

That's the funniest thing I've read today!

:peace:

pulled trigger on MW 101.2 today. doing Ortofon TA110 arm and using my Kleos cartridge...
Getting an Acoustical Systems Arche' headshell...

One thing not well advertised is that they no longer are making optional the clamp
and periphery ring, it comes with the table at 7600 retail.....

Hope it blows my former VPI table away.......

According to George M.

The list price of the 101.2 is 7600.00 U.S.

The previous model was 5995.00 plus 1195 for clamping kit....

The increase of approx 500 represents the fluid damped motor upgrade
as well as the increased cost for doing a removable arm platform.....

In my opinion, it's a minor increase, especially where looks are concerned.....
the 101.2 is much more attractive....

hey doug i just saw this!!! sorry. yea this table is a badass and a great value and the cartridge combo is to die for. i never thought i could get this quality of sound in my budget.id have to spend alot more money to get just a little bit better performance, and i dont think its worth it. im stuck between the rock and a hardplace thing. i would keep this forever but i think ineed to upgrade the tonearm to my love the triplanar, but i lose the quick change cartridge capability of the ortofon which i will need in the near future. so whats a guy to do. oh hey i just found this tasty tidbit. lmao
wonder if i can upgrade. it seems to have the same list price as mine. might be a misprint.

haha!! i bought my table because it was the ugly 3 footed duckling.lmao!!! and i loved the sound for the money. the black is way nicer i agree. when i first heard about the 101.2 i emailed GM and he said it was a few months away but there was no price increase from the previous model with the added clamping options. sorry i didnt know he raised it up a little, which is fine, cause improvements cost money. btw the table is so "rubberized" i tried a couple isolation platforms and they do nothing to improve it. its already isolated.

I think George needs to consider having whoever does the rubber/aluminum sandwich for him, cut it bigger and
turn it into a Merrill Williams audio stand......so that my bryston BDP2, Esoteric K-03 and my CAT SL1 Renaissance
can ride the rubber too.......can you imagine how well the turntable would be set off by sitting on a matching rack???

i like that. i think even though in pics this 101 looks a little goofy, the fit and finish is outstanding if you see it in person. perfectly cut and beautifully machined.
the removable armboard on the 101.2 is a great idea. me and Jeff(av solutions)have spoke about a new armboard with a triplanar, and once it is set up i can go back and fourth between arms with just 2 screws and little to no adjustment . because id like a triplanar with an awesome cartridge on it in the near future but dont want to lose the quick change ability of the ortofon. my plan is to run several cartridges. i just have to find and buy speakers first before i start that journey.
how long until you get the table?

George says he has 5 tables coming early next week and so I think I'll have it in a week and a half
or so. It will probably take a little longer for the Ortofon arm and the Arche' headshell than
the TT. I thought about just swallowing a little harder and doing the Triplanar, but it would have
eliminated the possibility of going with an Ortofon SPU later unless I bought another arm then.....
It also would have put me within a rock's throw of an AMG V12 and I would have always wondered
if I shouldve tried that one........I'm hoping the MW puts that fear to rest very quickly.......then
maybe I'll do a TriPlanar later on...... What speakers are you considering. If you have the space
and the wife will allow it, do Magnepan 3.7s and be done with the speaker question forever......
