I have the entire Music Matters collection (#38), so adding the SRX collection was a easy choice.

Triple boxed. First LP spinning and sounding GREAT!

Mike,

I just ordered four of the SRX myself. Did you order the Coltrane Blue Train SRX? Apparently it is the only SRX title that is a redo of a previous MM title that was remastered the exact same way. Would be interested in your thoughts about how they compare.

Ordered, but not received.

The Blue Train SRX, is, in my opinion, even better than the standard 33RPM that was released by MMJ initially. It is DEAD QUIET, you can literally see into the mix in 3D. This is probably the best mono release from MMJ. Stereo is up for debate in my book.

Forgive my ignorance... is this SRX collection (the unboxing set that Mike purchased) all mono releases?

Rage debates on other forums whether these new reissues are just souped up audiophile releases with additional treble lift and exaggerated bass, thus no longer sounding natural like the original tapes/releases

or - the best sound these Blue Note albums have ever had.

Which is it?

I think there is a place in the current market for these MMJ reissues. If you compare an original (in good, mint or near-mint, condition) to one of these pressings, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find many differences in sonics. Van Gelder definitely liked the sound of stereo and did a great job mixing most of the 4000 series, after about 4020 and up. I wouldn't say that these MMJ pressings are meant to be an exact replica of the original, but are meant to fill a void in the market for a good, quality sounding Blue Note release... something we haven't had, on some releases, since the 70s with the Japanese Masterpiece Selection 150 series (pressed at King).

It would come down to personal preference on what YOU, as the listener, prefer to listen to. With a mint, first press, copy of Blue Train fetching five figures, you can pick up the entire MMJ set and more with that...

I, for one, find these MMJ reissues to be, what was once, a rare opportunity to own a clean-sounding copy of a Blue Note 4 and 5000 series release.

MikeM, great to have you joining the Sharks discussions.

Appreciate your insights into all things vinyl. Very interesting.

Absolutely. I am more than pleased that MM does these re-issues, and I hope they branch out to other classic labels such as Prestige, Verve, and Impulse. For those who want to hold out for the original pressings in at least NM condition, well... happy hunting.

For me, the SRX are a nice step up over the standard MM. I don't find the tone of the sonic signature changed, just blacker background, very quiet tracking and somewhat more dynamic.

I am looking forward to getting some of these new reissues, compared to my originals, I would bet that they are a lot quieter in the groove.

Now is the time to start picking them up, a lot of the stuff they had in-stock is going out of stock lately.
