Mike's Destination Turntable !!

Not sure there is really a best Bob. At this level, pick your choice of the finest. To my ears, the Kronos is superb and sonically miles ahead of many other tables I've heard. That being said, unless you have all the tables in the same system, it is difficult to be 100% certain.

Yes, I knew that, and like you said, unless ....

Also Mike, there are people who have built their own turntables (only one of them, a unique one, or very very few), and like this guy from Germany I talked to in the past; his $650,000 turntable is supposed to be state-of-the-art technological tour-de-force top notch spinner.
It's all digitally operated and DSP synchronized with onscreen display (perfect everything: speed, orientation relative to Earth's gravitational impedance, level, stabilization, absorption, humidity, temperature, ...); but transmitting music in the analog domain, of course. ....And using the very best materials, and very heavy.

Absolutely true. ...I exchanged few PMs with him about a year and half ago, from another site.

* Maybe Wizard knows him?

Mike, Peter Breuninger, the very nice gentleman who did that video, and many many more, from AVShowrooms, his own website; it would be real cool to have him here. Peter is one of the nicest people I ever talked too, and all his videos and his vast knowledge on everything quality audio related are impeccable. Plus he knows several grand audio masters (designers, manufacturers, music lovers, audiophiles, ...) from many places around the world.

Mike, if you have the chance please; tell him Bob (NorthStar) says Hi to him, and that I'm also sending my warmest invitation to him to join us here at AudioShark.

That would be excellent!

I heard a lot of great tables at RMAF - but when I heard the Kronos....it was on another level.

Lol!!! It's cool and all but it kinda looks like they stole a Clearaudio
Wood Innovation And modified it. I love the bottom platter that spins the opposite way to spin the top platter. Kinda cool.
But all in all for the retail price you can get an AMG/top shelf tonearm with a lyra atlas for less or with a goldfinger statement for a couple thou extra. And it's probably just as good if not better. IMO . :)

I will say that AMG's are very good, but listening to the Kronos gave me a "WOW" moment that the AMGs never have done for me. And "WOW" moments are fun. :woot:

Agreed, the wow factor is the most important factor when your contemplating spending that kind of money. I'm just saying a world class tonearm , a world class cartridge and top shelf cables are what your hearing mostly and my ear isn't good enough to tell the difference what type of table is running that setup. Well at least when you get into that class. Which is well above my class btw lmao!!!
Id love to hear this Kronos !!! Looks incredible!!!

Mike
I'd be perfectly happy with the table that you have.

If i had the $$ and the space for the big kronos, that'd be my pick for uber-table, before an airforce or caliburn, and i really, really love my AMG! I've spoken several times with Louis, the Montreal-based creator of the Kronos, and he is a super guy, and clearly obsessive details guy. The kronos has undergone several modifications from its release to now so it is evolving to a higher level than begun. Eg, shifted from 3 drive cords to 2. Shunyata's Caelin just bought a custom one. One of the newly designed arms by louis' colleague and retailer filtronique staffmember, has been used for several shows recently. While it's quite impressive, there are lots of options that would fit this table nicely.
There are rumours that louis is releasing a "mini-kronos" in a smaller footprint and cheaper model.
At this level, having difficulty choosing is a very fortunate problem to have ;)

Minus K BM-8 isolation platform is a great investment for a unsuspended table, and it may just stop you in your tracks :snicker:. If I were any of you I would try that before investing in uber tables. The biggest issue with a turntable is noise and the Minus K reduces that to insignificant levels.

If I'm not mistaken US residents can get one on loan, so you can try before you buy......... what better!
