Might ditch the AV Receiver and forget about Surround Sound altogether...

Besides being a music lover, I have also been a Home Theater aficionado since I was a teenager, back in the good old LaserDisc days and Dolby Pro-Logic soundtracks. My first surround receiver was a Technics, followed by a Yamaha once Dolby Digital was introduced, then another Yamaha with dts, then yet another one with lossless decoding once Blue Ray came along, and then finally a Marantz, purchased about 3 years ago. Many other things in the system changed as well, of course. The speakers are different, the display went from a 22" Philco CRT to a 65" Panasonic plasma, the sources are different... hell, even the country is different!

But throughout the years I became disillusioned with contemporary cinema, which is usually the sort of genre that benefits the most from the associated pyrotechnics that come with surround sound. Today, I can't stand the usual Hollywood mindless entertainment. "Movie magic" is dead. Last time I felt it was 10 years ago, during "The Return Of The King". Every time I go to a movie theater today I leave with a headache... Most of my favorites films from all times are in mono, and today 99% of my movie watching consists of foreign, independent, low-budget, cult or bizarre films.

I hate loud noises. At one point in time, the opening scene in "Terminator 2" was my bible. I probably played that 500 times,. No kidding. Now, I can't stand gratuitous explosions, I can't stand woofer torture-tests and I can't stand worrying about annoying the neighbors (I live in a condo). Oh, and I can't stand James Cameron, either.

Every once in a while, I would still use my Marantz receiver. Rare occasions in the last year or so included "The Hobbit" and... I don't even remember what else! In fact, today I realized that I probably use the receiver only twice or three times a year, if that. Let's say 5, tops. But I watch movies almost every night, and my Panasonic's 65VT60 speakers are fine for that.

To make matters worse, the Marantz is now defective and produces an intermittent hiss/noise from the left channel. A quick online search reveals that I am not alone. It's a common problem with this particular model.

I honestly don't feel like dealing with warranty issues, nor buying a new unit. What for? Most receivers today are crap, plain and simple. Overstuffed with thing I will never, ever use.

Today I looked at my system. It looked back at me. A big pile of cables and shelves in front of me. And, for the first time, I seriously thought about just ditching surround sound altogether.

Just imagine: No center channel. No receiver. No back speakers. No back speakers stands. No cable mess. No HDMI from here, to there and then everywhere. Not worrying about whether the left surround channel is working properly when, in fact, the fault lies with a crappy sound mix. I could also gain so much space in my room and use that to store records, books, or whatever else I feel like... I use my Prima Luna to amplify the main front speakers, while the Marantz takes care of the center and rear channels. Because of this, when the whole system is on, it gets just too darn hot...

Movies are still very much a crucial part of my life. Same as music. But what isn't anymore, it seems, is surround sound. The TV is certainly staying. So is my Oppo 103, modified for all-region BD and DVD playback. My Oppo 95 handles audio duties only.

I am thinking of just going for it, but I fear regretting my decision in those RARE cases when one movies that is worth my time features a decent surround track that actually benefits and enhances the story... I spent a lot of time cabling, setting and hooking everything up properly, and yet... those black boxes stares back at me and I feel... nothing.

Have you ever gone through something similar? What caused your change of heart? Do you regret it?

Nice write up... I had one time with full Marantz h/t set up with thier 5 mono blcoks with AV900 processor and on board dolby digital processor. That was a lot of money back then however I felt the same way as you did and I gave away whole set up few years ago. Now my whole attention is on 2 channel and I never regret it. I bought the cheap used Yamaha receiver even that one I haven't had a chance to play through one whole movie yet. Just collecting the dust these days.

When I move to new house this November I'm planning to buy ( please don't laugh) the Bose set up. I think that will do the work for me. I like the smaller foot print of speakers and sound just fine with movies. Maybe I can score with good condition of used.

Esteban, I think I know exactly what you're saying.

To help out, just play 'Baraka', or 'Samsara', or 'Pina', or 'Nino Rota' on Blu-ray, with their hi-res surround sound music soundtrack.
That should restore your confidence back where it should be. :)

* Those big Hollywood blockbusters like 'Star Trek - Into Darkness', or 'Pacific Rim', or 'Olympus Has Fallen' won't do you and your wife and kids any good. They are a total distraction to true Cinema art form and artistic music compositions.

It's that simple. Don't sweat it, just watch the right material (for a while); the true artistic motion pictures with great music of real artistic merit by the true artists (cineastes et compositeurs). ...And not those fake business money makers of this fake world started by Hollywood and gang.
That's my view, and I highly respect my own view when it comes to Cinema (Moving Pictures) and Sound (Real Music).

______________

So get a good quality surround sound processor of great value (like Integra, Classe, Denon), with five quality satellite speakers of great paradigm and value (tons of them out there), a five-channel amp of modest power and frugality, and two quality subs for less than two grands (HSU, SVS), and love life for its true artistic merit from the real artists, and not the charlatans.

Do you know what I'm saying, or do you need me to elaborate further (I could write a book about it) or to draw you a painting? :)

P.S. Because you live in a condo, just get a receiver instead (Onkyo/Integra, or Denon) with Audyssey MultEQ XT or XT32, and five small satellites and one or two smaller subwoofers (for better bass balance).
So you don't have to listen at Reference level and get complaints from your co-residents, and still enjoy what surround sound from the right material can bring to you, your wife and your kids in the comfort of your own home (condo).
And that will cost you next to nothing, for a person of your caliber and class. ...And you'd still get the full benefit of those quality movies and documentaries and music in surround sound.

And when you watch something from Hollywood, adjust the Master volume control according to your brain that you just left outside your condo's door (low).

One last thing: When watching something with your wife, don't watch stuff that is noisy and disruptive (violent, bloody, ...). That's for kids who are lost in this lost world created by greedy men. It brings nothing good, but everything bad.
And if you are honest enough with yourself to realize that then you are better than the rest. ...And you don't let others rule your life with their greed and inspiration to violence, and you're much better off and a better man with peace in mind and for everyone around you.

See, it's not the electronic's fault (except for your faulty Marantz receiver); it's you and the choice you make in selecting the right material to watch and listen to (medium, software), of true high artistic quality value, and from the real artists. ...Not the ones with big dollar signs attached to their films. ...But the ones with a true heart and with the goal of conveying a message of love, peace, hard work, artistic beauty, visually (photography) and auditory (music).

The best musicians are the ones who are unknown, mainly from the back streets, the dark alleys.
They have more to say from their heart and from what truly is going on than the ones who make millions playing in front of most masses.
Classical orchestras are poor, and yet they are the very best.

Oh, and Marantz's latest pre/pro (SSP) has Audyssey MultEQ XT32 (and is Pro Ready, of course). ...Finally!
...The AV8801 ($3,600 MSRP).
Then you just need to add a multichannel amplifier, or two. ...Add that's roughly another $2,000-4000 for a grand total of about $5,000 (street). ...And you need more speakers, of course, and at least one sub (but two are better).

BUT! The Onkyo TX-NR818 is a great pre/pro with Audyssey MultEQ XT32 as well, and has internal seven channels of amplification already!
And for only six hundred bucks ($599)! ...For you Esteban, it's perfect! :) ...Even for a bunch of other members here; if matched with small/decent quality satellites and a sub or two. ...That, is hi-res (& hi-def) frugality!
- Match it with this: http://www.hometheater.com/content/pioneer-sp-bs41-lr-speaker-system
- ...Or this: http://www.hometheater.com/content/pioneer-sp-bs22-lr-speaker-system

<<<>>> Now for less than $999 (street), you got the full home theater system; pre/pro with Audyssey MultEQ XT32, with top-notch video processing, & with very decent 7-channels of amplification (THX Select2 certification), ...and five quality sound designer satellite speakers, plus a very decent subwoofer (perfect for condos and apartments)! ...This beats any Home-Theater-In-A-Box by a very large margin; actually it can compete with systems costing as much as ten times more!
Watch 'Tron Legacy' with it (on Blu-ray), and be prepared to be blown away musically!

I totally understand what you're saying. Unless its a action film, I'm not sure I get much more out of my movie watching in 9.2 then I do on my regular old TV.

But, I'm a two channel guy - so a little biased. :)

I've got to admit that I'm in the same boat. I've got all the makings of a HT but it's sitting in a closet unused. Some days I wish it was all hooked up but most of the time I am content to watch movies in stereo. The thing keeping me from making the move from a half baked setup to either a two channel music setup that I can still watch movies on or a multichannel setup that I can still enjoy music on is finding the right pre/pro and combination of gear that sounds good and is in my meager budget.

Currently I am leaning toward gearing my setup to music and selling off the unused gear to put it toward a decent two channel preamp.

Good luck with your decision!

Welcome to the forum Matt!

I just recently did this myself. For some reason, I find that decent stereo playback for movies is perfectly fine for me and I enjoy it that way a great deal. I was CONSTATNLY dorking with levels based on whatever movie I was watching, or messing with sub output. Now I just turn things on, prepare a giant pile of snax and watch Walking Dead without giving the system a single thought. I love movies, I just don't really get into surround sound like I used to... My girlfriend hasn't said "NOW what are you messing with?" in ages so the benefits are twofold...

I'm 100% in agreement!

That's what we like! Everyone has something to learn, something to say and something to contribute.

I went from a full blown 7.1 expensive home theater to a simple Marantz receiver and the Magnapan mmg's for front and rear speakers and a little sunfire 8" sub. I have the little Maggie's hung on the wall so they take up NO floor space. The little Maggie's are unobtrusive and have the speed of their big brothers. They really are perfect for home theater and pretty cheap at $300 per pair.

We absolutely enjoy the simple system more than the full blown set up. It's just so easy to use.

Just to chime in...I went a completely different route...Ditched the 5.1 Bose with Yamaha Flagship AVR for...Drumroll...Polk Soundbar and wireless sub. It is more than enough...

Several reasons...surround is not quite what it used to be unless you play Bob's rather eclectic (sorry bob...just saying) Blurays...Your typical StarTrek, Superman, Batman, etc etc.. just winds up being a lot of noise.

I did not have a clean way to wire...entryway, fireplace, etc. So it would have been a hassle in the new house.

I tested the Polk and it does what I need..even mounted cleanly right below the base of the TV

Not knocking surround...just found that my needs could be met easier...and since my audio room is a completely separate deal...well...:P
