I saw a review for the Cara, https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2017/10/29/review-merrill-audio-cara-preamplifier/ , it has some interesting features.

Fully balanced with only XLR inputs and outputs, you can use an adaptor for single ended. The preamp has 2 sets of outputs but each output gain can be independently set which would be cool for bi-amping. Reasonably priced with a separate power supply, the same supply used for the $12k Christine according to the review. No controls on the faceplate, not so good if you are one to misplace your remotes, LOL. That's actually not me, my remotes are always in the same place. Each input level can also be adjusted.

I have not heard the Wyred4Sound STP-SE, I'm imagining these two would make for a good shoot out. He says not having heard either :)

Hi, Mr P,

Thanks: looks interesting for US$3500 and perhaps a relative bargain compared to so much that's out there today. Its strengths on paper are its remarkable flexibility and control features, and the generally good rep of Merrill products.

However it's still a bit high for a poor person like me. More attractive for me is the Wyred4Sound STP-SE which you mention at US$2000 for the basic rig. I'm also interested in the Schiit Freya which is much cheaper still at US$700 -- I'm still looking for comprehensive commentary on the Freya.

As you can see I'm using an old ARC LS9. The LS9 is also fully balance which I consider important for me. The LS9 is functionally adequate for me; my main problem with it is its high gain in from balance outputs which mean that I'm running with the Volume dial at 8-10 o'clock. Of course any new pre I'd consider would at have to at least match the LS9 in sound quality.
