I suppose that look appeals to some (like 'distressed' furniture), but I find it too rough in appearance as if they skipped several steps of finishing. To each their own!
 
I like the look!
Glossy finishing is cool too, but this "rough" look is also attractive, depending on the surroundings...

Paul - top platform is Brazilian Jatoba, an extremely hard wood.

Alexandre - The finish looks rough but all the deal cracks are filled with a black material so the surface is smooth.
 
Did you make the center diffusor yourself ..? i like the look of your room , all the wood gives it a rich soft look .....



Really nice setup, are you into analog LP's ....... :)
