Paul, my friend's system sounded great with his old S5's and Jorma cables. There is definitely some synergy going on there with Magico/Vitus. On the face of it, the Mk2 model seems to be a smart buy.

I love how B&W goes through great lengths to reduce high and mid frequency diffraction, then adds diffraction to their new woofer section. :bonkers:
It takes a designer to notice things like that. I thought the same thing when I saw them.

I am not a designer and I know I am being a dumbo head again but I thought diffraction was largely benign at LF's??? (Just wanna learn.)
Vap, as an aside and not to derail thread, I did ok on USO. I just felt it was to oversold in low 8's and couldn't resist. Still long XOP but out of contagion.
It will have a minimal effect on the woofers. The problem starts with their 2-way, where the woofer plays double duty as mid driver and still have that ring:
The old 805D2 was much better in that regard.
Actually the best amp I've heard with my S5s were Vitus SM-011 monos.

David...is that really you??? I hope so! If not, you should tell him to sneak back onto the forum...few had more passion. Maybe he could use a new handle like Tom A, or B maybe Tom C, no wait let me think.....maybe Tom D or E. I will eventually come up with a good one. :doubtful:
When you see him, wish him (or you) our best. I seriously miss his get-up-and-go.
You're correct that it's the shorter (higher in frequency) wavelengths that interact with hard edges and scatter. But that tweeter will still absolutely interact with the woofer protrusion thingies. Below 8000hz or so, the tweeter will likely have 180 degree dispersion.

Both comments make sense. Thanks. What is odd is that one would think, even though B&W may not be the best speaker maker on the planet, they should be better than this implies. Particularly given their historically uncompromising efforts to minimize HF diffraction...pretty weird.
Adam, I have both the SM011's and the SM102's and which ever set of amps I use I say "those are the ones", then I switch to the other set and I say "no, these are the ones"......even the RI 100 gives the Vitus sound and really matches well with any of the Magicos....and other speakers as well.
Exactly, just an example of form and function diverging.

Can you provide some texture to the basis of this synergy. What is it about the Magico that works so well with Vitus. I have long wondered this given the raves. What is it about the nature of the Magico that makes it such a good fit with Vitus or visa versa. Is it warmth, sweetness, grip, etc.???

My best take on it is that the Vitus electronics add a naturalness to the sound of the Magicos without a loss of resolution associated with many of the current top SS brands. I would say maybe in-between neutral and warm. The reproduced soundstage is dimensional and holographic, "almost" tube like dimensionality, but then there are unlimited dynamics that don't usually accompany tubes, especially on the Magicos, which sound great with tubes but do respond to power when it is provided.
With the Vitus/Magico combination the bass is world class. The texture of bass lines even when several bass instruments are playing is uncanny.....riveting, but natural. I think that the magic of the bass with this combination has a lot to do with the overall "just right" feeling that is derived from the overall sonic presentation. Seems like when you get the bass so clean, clear and textured that overall timbre soundstaging, dimensionality, space between instruments really falls into place.
Authoritative wall of sound, with a natural midrange, dimensionality, space between instruments, world class bass etc is what I hear with the combination.
That's the best description that I can provide, hope it is helpful.

....yes that happens to me when I listen to this particular combination. Some "matches" are better than others, this just happens to be a very good match. And that is NOT to say that there not other great matches with Magicos, as there are, but the Vitus/Magico combo definitely does "the trick".
