Magico S5 mk2

It has been 2.5 years since I have my S5. I welcome the arrival of the MkII, as the changes seem worthwhile. If the S5 can be upgraded within ~$10,000, it would be easy decision for me. Otherwise, I will wait for reviews and auditions. It just happens that I normally change speakers every 2 - 3 years in the past.

I don't worry about frequent model upgrades as long as the changes are well documented. I still don't quite know what are changed between a Ref 75 and a Ref 75SE other than the output tube type.

Charles, the early reports are that the original S5 will not be upgradable to the mk2.

Yes Mike, that unfortunately seems to be the case. The MkII better be substantially improved in SQ. The S5 has been very satisfying in my environment. :audiophile:

LOL. I guess we won't know, since you did ban him. :)

As long as we are on the subject, he was right that the S7 top is a separate enclosure, while I felt the line on the side was cosmetic.

Bodhi ordered S7 way back.

Saw a post on another site (may have been from Bodhi!) stating that the press release was mistaken regarding the use of the new diamond/beryllium tweeter in the S1 and S5 MkII versions. Says that they will not be using it and that they confirmed with a dealer that they will still use a beryllium tweeter as shown in the picture. Not sure what to believe but I would lean towards the official release from the manufacturer being correct.

As I read the data on the new Magico S5 Mk2 it appears to be a nearly complete overhaul of the original design rather than a change that was minor enough to harmoniously fit into an upgrade path. Nearly everything about the Mk2 breaks new ground. This is the first Magico speaker to pique my interest. Additionally, the slightly contoured top plate and the thicker base plate with the new outriggers make its appearance far more attractive in my opinion. I am looking forward to reading new user impressions.

With the recent announcements, I need to rotate some Magico demos. If there are any Canadians interested in demo Magico's at attractive pricing please give me a call.

My Lamborghini Orange S7's are not going anywhere BTW.

As the new tweeter is probably most distinguishing, it doesn't make good sense not to include it. My interest would drop significantly without the new tweeter.

If this S5 mk2 is a completely different speaker from the S5 then I don't think it will negatively affect S5 prices. Now if it were the same price as, or less than, the S5 then that would affect S5 resale values.

Agreed. they are better and more money. What's wrong with that?

In the home theatre/video world, products get replaced with new models that are better for less money. Not the case here.

The new price increase could actually stabilize used pricing on S5's and make them look like an even better deal. Maybe an exaggeration on my part but not by much.

Any rumors or speculation about whether Magico will do a "Mk II" upgrade to the S3?

With all the talk of the S series, I wonder where this leaves the Q series? I think the Q1 is a real sleeper across the entire brand.

Just wondering what now for the q1, q3 and q5 which sport the "ancient" nanotec mid and low frequency drivers and pure berrylium tweeter? Both q3 and q5 cost more than the s5mk 2 and S7 respectively but after reading about the technology introduced in the new S class drivers, one would conclude that these new models should easily outperform their "ancient" but more costly predecessors.

The Magico press release was 100% accurate regarding the drivers that will be part of the S5 MKII, including the tweeter.

My guess is, except for the Q7, the rest will be discontinued. The reason is they are very labor intensive to manufacture. I would guess a new TOTL series to be introduced based on the M platform.
