Magico Announces the A3 Loudspeaker

- no mention of the midrange enclosure

From the data sheet below it appears the tweeter and mid are in the same enclosure. I bet the square enclosure is easier and less expensive to manufacture. Might have to think about these as an upgrade for the fronts in my HT/spare stereo system. The cost is the same as my Aerial Acoustics 7 fronts. That is who they have to beat at that price.

This is super interesting. Looks like a V3 in a Q body (with Be tweeter) at 1/3 the cost.

- no diamond coated beryllium tweeter (pure beryllium)
- no graphene woofers (nano-tec)
- no mention of the midrange enclosure

You mean no “bubble” midrange enclosure (There is no such thing as a 3-way, in a box, dynamic loudspeaker without a separate midrange enclosure/compartment, the speakers will not work properly).

I wonder how it compares to S3 mk1. Seems awfully close to S3 except the cabinet shape. I agree it's a nice move by Magico to offer these techs at less than $10k.

The S3 enclosure is still much better from the acoustical point of view (less diffraction on the outside, less internal stading waves on the inside) plus it has the S3 has the bubble shaped mid-enclosure.

The S3 mk 1 should sound better still on paper, but you know how it is - you have to listen first as there may be some other advancements in driver design we do not know.

The A3 Be tweeter is different from S3/S5 tweeter as it is 28mm in diameter (same as M3), which suggests it is build by Morel.

I think Magico will do very well with this speaker. I'm actually amazed they were able to price it so competitively.

A great move by Alon and Magico. Prices have continued to go up. There is a real opportunity for speakers in this $10K price point.

With products like this Magico is positioning themselves to become the dominate force in mainstream high performance audio. Very well done!!

Mike, do you know if they will be releasing an A5 (larger cabinet and large woofers), and if so, when?

As far as I know, they will not be. A3 will be top of the food chain in “A”.

That is very interesting. A focused on small speakers, S for the whole range, mid-tier quality, and M for the larger, statement models.

I expect there will be optional outriggers for a more stable platform.

And strange that the A3 PR has yet to show up on TAS or Stereophile web pages.

I am very glad to see that Magico is offering this speaker at a price that will appeal to much larger audiences. It will compete very well against the B&W 803 D3. I do find it odd that the A3 has better low end frequency cutoff (22 Hz) than the S3 MKII (24 Hz) or the M3 (24 Hz). The black brushed aluminum finish looks very elegant. Maybe in the future the brushed finish will become options on other speakers as well.

Hi Mike
Are there any other colour options finishes for A3?

According to the press release from Magico the A3 is only available in a brushed black finish:

Ship date: 1st Quarter 2018"

I'm surprised they do not offer them in silver brushed aluminum finish - it is cheaper to make than black anodizing.
