Lumin

I know that there are Lumin users who use the built-in volume control satisfactorily, although we recommend keeping the volume at 100%.

Lumin S1 has the same 32-bit digital volume (when digital output is turned off) as some ESS9018-based DAC products that advertise a built-in preamp. So perhaps you can try it with and without a pre-amp and see which setup you prefer.

Here's ESS presentation on why its digital volume is really good:

Thanks Peter. I will read through the material you suggest.

Hi guys,

I want to share my experience with Lumin and his PSU.
I own Lumin since very beginning (2013.01), my first unit was replaced, but it is another story. I remember first firmware version was 0.99b :), it looks like a beta version, but unit works great from very beginning.
As unit was under warranty I was not willing to touch it with any modifications, but I was curious what is inside and how it is built. Stock PSU built quality is OK, but it looks too simple for me :). From the photos on internet new "improved" PSU of S1 looks very similar to A1 (I have no schematic) , but just with replaced capacitors (for sure I can be wrong there).
So I have started to google what I can use to replace it. For me it was clear that there is no such "finished" product on the market and if I will find one it will be custom built by a guys like a Kenneth Lau(btw he makes very nice LPSU). So why not to build it by my self?? I have no time anymore to play with schematic, PCB board drawings and so on, so I just read through DIY'es forums and collected information. At the end I have decided to go with schematic of Per Anders Sjostrom, he selling PCB boards to solder. If you are too lazy to collect all necessary parts and solder boards you can even order soldered PCB's, but cost is quite high(at least for me).
There are photos of assambled PSU:

To be honest for digital part of Lumin it can be used something simpler than fancy schematic from sjostrom. Al least in my system it has minor impact on SQ, I have not done extensive testings by comparing differences. But for analog part differences in SQ are quite big , better/more bass, smooth highs, better instrument separation(I'm not good in such SQ descriptions :))

Does it was worth? YEP :). Does it is better than others?? I don't know and don't care, but I'm very satisfied with the final result.
Parts, PCB's and housing cost for me ~400Eu and few nice evenings with soldering iron.

Cheers
Darius

hello dariusb,
I use the S1 at today with the original PS. a friend have the "honk kong" Kenneth Lau power supply and he say me that a different s really "present" in SQ.

I dont have tested the K.Lau PS well I dont know....anyway I think that give a extra in sound quality or a different sound quality vs hte standard PS Lumin.

I have a Synology NAS (Miminserver is really necessary????) and too the L1 HD.

You use ethernet cable CAT6/CAT7 or expensive rj45 cable? ex. a audioquest vodka 0.75cm . usd 300.- make a REALLY difference?

My router is around 4 meter from the Lumin!! -> I can go with the L1 and a expensive rj45 calbe to the router (0.75cm) or playce the L1 over the PS from Lumin and use 2x 4 meter CAT7 rj45 cables.

other solution a "spliter" ethernet and use expensive rj45 calbes... (have a Sense)?

thank you for reply

Hi db33,

I'm not familiar with Synology NAS, but probably you can try to use default multimedia app's and look if Lumin can see them as a music file server. IMHO Minimserver was created to work as music server only and it is oriented for best SQ and convenience.

Also I have never played with L1 so I can't advise anything.

I use standard CAT5E cable, probably it cost less than 5Eur ;). As my Lumin ethernet port supports only 100Mb I see no reason to use CAT6/7 cables. You should try by yourself , the best judges are your ears.

I have never played with different ethernet cables, I'm "close to IT" guy and I know how packets are traveling through the network :). Lumin ethernet port is equipped with galvanic isolation transformer, which helps to reduce problems with grounding loops and etc. There are error correction mechanisms in the data flow in between switch and Lumin, so packets arrives in "good shape", if something is "unclear" for Lumin, packets are sent again :). Also there is some sort of prebuffering in Lumin, you can test it by unplugging ethernet cable while playing some song. Lumin still plays for some time until he has song data packets inside the buffer(duration depends on song file size, probably you can play all mp3 song from the buffer).

So if you have a chance just borrow ethernet cable and test it with your equipment.

BR,
Darius

Good observation!

Helllo Darius,

the price for a rj45 cable CAT5/6/7 is really "little"!!! you can have 5 meter CAT7 for around usd. 25-30 max!!!

Minimserver:

I have the Minimserver on my NAS installed..... -> with my Ipad I can choice the Mininserver for "upload" the tracks (or direct the NAS directory where I have saved my music) but at the end with
Mininserver too is the same! (IMHO)

CD without cover -> it's possible "charge" a cover directly inside the "Lumin Apps"?

Best rgds

a Audioquest vodka in 0.75 cm. = Usd. 260.- ca!!!! thenif you need 2 x 4 meters vodka in another budget!

I agree with with that a CAT5/6/7 dont make a difference in quality sound vs. a vodka (or if you can hear little
difference this one in not in the price liga from 1200 usd. or so it's!!!)

I have the Lumin A1 and also use Roon and Tidal..Any word on when the Lumin app will have Roon added and MQA..?..

I cannot talk about schedule on future enhancements, and it's not my decision. If there are other Roon users here, please voice out.

At this point I don't have much to say about the possibility of MQA on Lumin players - but Lumin U1 transport (not player) will not decode MQA - just so people don't get the wrong expectations. Lumin U1 by default sends bit-perfect audio to a MQA DAC, which can then perform the necessary MQA processing.

Something VERY cool I just found out today.....

The Lumin app control software DOES allow users to control at least two Lumin appliances simultaneously AND playing different playlists on each! Very nice design. Thanks Lumin, now I can continue to burn in equipment (currently my pair of NORD amps) in one system unattended and still listen to whatever I want on my other living room system. Sweet.
