Lumin D1. Wow…. It's a steal.

could any one give me a little comparison with this vs the aurender n100 both seem to be great, I suppose the sound is close? I was interested in the Tidal streaming aspect the most.

The N100 is a streamer only, you need to pair it with a DAC.

Having said that, I'll be comparing the N10 + MSB Analog vs the Lumin D1/A1 next week.

I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing about this shootout. I think the N10/MSB will win, but the Lumin D1 is the value champ for sure.

But let's see!

I wanted a TotalDAC too but couldn't get it arranged in time :¬)

FWIW, the dealer I bought the Lumin from (who sells MSB), prefers the Lumin to the Analog + UMT stack over I2S.

Streamer + DAC = no USB, power or clock issues. Hence it competes with the I2S pairing. You get that natural flow and organic tangibility.

This would be interesting.

I am curious though - would you mind sharing why you bought both the A1 + D1? Are you planning to return one of them?

Yes. Bought the D1 new with 30 day return, A1 was a great ex-demo price from local dealer (14 day trial).

I have a dac and was interested in the streaming aspect of the D1 vs the aurender. they are both close in price and I presume they would sound pretty close but I could be wrong

If you have time to burn it/them in, I suggest using different bitrates of music and DSD to burn in the player(s) and the LPS. Turn on repeat mode and let it/them play 7x24. The poweramp can be turned off (if desired).

If you use a Lumin player as a streaming transport for coaxial connection to another DAC, and if you care about DSD, you need to make sure that your DAC accepts "DSD over PCM (DoP) over coaxial". Current Lumin players do not output audio via USB.

I've read a reviewer who said that D1 (digital) coaxial output is very close to S1 (of course analog output is an entirely different matter).

The A1 is fully burned in as it's ex-demo. The D1 has been playing non stop since it arrived (few days now) :¬)

Hi Everybody

Read this thread with interest but then it went flat. What were the conclusions?

D1 with LPS still considered close/better than A1? What were the conclusions with the Aurender/dac comparison? Is the S1 still the stand out player compared to D1 with LPS? S1 with LPS, any conclusions?

Thanks guys

Thanks Peter and Jock

I'm looking forward to receiving my first delivery of Lumin's, D1's plus LPS, S1 and L1. I'm using direct to Nord's. Speakers Boenicke W5 and W11.

Hope l don't need your help in setting up, Peter, but it's good to know you are here.

Peter, this is a question for you please : have you heard of any incompatibility issues using digital out BNC to rca either with certain makes of cables or preamps? I can't get S1 to talk to SST pre with dac. No adaptors being used, a proper BNC to RCA cable.

Please:
- Toggle the digital audio output: turn it to OFF then ON
- Toggle the Resampling: turn it to Custom then OFF
- Try different sampling rates of PCM music, starting from 16-bit 44.1kHz (Redbook CD rip), include 24/96, 24/192 if you have
- When playing PCM music, look at the front panel and make sure that it's NOT showing "DSD<" that indicates DSD conversion
- If these do not solve your problem, let me know which Lumin firmware version you're running - I'll test it for you tomorrow.

Let me know how your preamp behaves - does it detect a signal, or even a sampling rate? Or it behaves as if no data is sent?

I haven't heard of any compatibility issue regarding the Lumin digital output, with the following normal restrictions:
- When playing DSD and using Bitstream setting, digital output is turned off.
- When playing DSD and using DoP setting, analog outputs are turned off, digital output sends DoP signal, but not all DAC supports DoP from SPDIF.
- Maximum PCM over SPDIF is 24/192
