Lumin D1. Wow…. It's a steal.

Thanks Peter. Tried all that on D1 and S1, still not connecting. I have version 6.0.6 2016 12.16.

That's the app version. Please find the firmware version for Lumin player instead (on the same page you'll see IP Address) - either 7.0x or 8.0x

How does your preamp behave - does it detect a signal, or even a sampling rate? Or it behaves as if no data is sent?

Peter, sorry about that. Firmware is 7.09. SST preamp only displays input type selected (coax). Digital out is working ok with Benchmark DA3 and others.

If the Lumin digital out is working ok with other equipment, perhaps we can investigate this from the SST preamp side.

If your SST preamp is Thoebe II, it seems to me that its digital inputs are available only if you purchased the optional $500 SST DAC upgrade. If you have indeed purchased it (and SST has shipped you a correctly configured product), please check that it is working correctly by verifying other digital inputs, e.g. use a computer to play a music file to the USB or optical input of the SST preamp.

It's an older demo model one of the first ones, the new models may be ok? Certainly it has a dac and has worked in various other set ups. May try a W4S "Remedy". U1 might work ok, need to try one. SST distributor is on the case.

Lumin S1 straight to SST amp, works really well.

I retested the Lumin S1 digital output to be normal.

At this point, I'd recommend trying out a BNC-RCA converter to be used together with a standard 75ohm RCA digital coaxial cable.

Had problems using a BNC socket/RCA female adaptor and Lumin before with other pre/dac's. The BNC to RCA cable overcame that issue and worked with the other pre/dac's.

What I have not tried so far is a BNC/BNC cable into BNC male/RCA male adaptor. I was loaned one of those but need to get a cable.

For a S1 direct to amp setup, please turn off S1 digital output - this way you get a 32-bit volume from Lumin. (Not applicable to A1 / T1 / D1)

By the way, XLR balanced output is recommended since Lumin uses a true balanced design.

Balanced all the way.

All good and best results so far used direct. Preamps have just got in the way so far. I would like to try the digital out with a external clock and dac just to see what that's like. The S1 dac is really good and will be difficult to better. U1 is on my radar to try.

Peter thanks for your input

I had an S1 and the Waversa hub made a huge difference with it.

I wouldn't listen to the S1 without it.

I may be getting a D1 so I can see how it compares.

Listening to the D1 with a Plixir power supply.

I dare say it's more musical than the S1 that I owned.

Just impressed with the D1 + Plixir combo.

For most people, they can stop here.

I find the D1 more musical and dynamic (with the Plixir) than the S1.

I think this is due to the Plixir vs Lumin power supply.

I always found the S1 to be lacking punch.

I am running the sbooster power supply on mine. I wonder how that would do against the Plixir

I actually think the D1 (with the Plixir) is more musical, fluid, and dynamic than the S1.

Must be the power supply?

Don't forget that the D1 and S1 use different DAC chips. Wolfson WM8741 in the D1 and ESS SABRE[SUP]32[/SUP] 9018 in S1.

Ah OK.

I find the D1 has that musicality and fluidity that isn't often found in a source.

Lumin dealers have an interesting dilemma on their hands when presenting their line up to a customer.

Interestingly, I spoke to a audiophile friend who makes high end cables in the UK.

He had the same experience with the S1, A1, and D1.

He found the S1 to be hyper detailed, while the A1/D1 were musical and fun.

I added a Ziro audio Disclosure power cord to the D1.

I actually think it's better than the S1 now.

Was using an Audience AU24se power cord (my previous reference) with the S1.

Hard to believe that a power cord can do this.
