...and you lose everything you own and you have to start over in a small apartment. When your back on your feet, do you buy a small inexpensive system or go with the higher bang for buck headphone system?

And no, this didn't happen to me...yet. Just was thinking about it and it's a tough call for me as there's something about speaker listening I simply prefer to headphones.
 
I guess it all depends on how much the insurance settlement was

I would also have to add, how big is the room, would you be in an appt.

If it was me, I would buy a small speaker when those times for turning it up are ok and a decent pair of headphones for those nights where you just can't turn up. All while still enjoying the music.
 
I am not a headphone guy either and prefer speakers. Could I "downsize"? Sure. I could pick a smaller system/speakers and be just as happy.
 
Maggie MMG's (or whatever they're called now) and a little Cambridge integrated with a VPI scout TT and a Ortofon 2M.
 
I'm also not a headphone guy. Small Maggies or KEF, nice integrated and small Lampi DAC and voila, done.

Both.

A compact system for regular daylight-hour listening, and a pair of headphones for nighttime/early morning listening sessions.
 
Small speakers: Harbeth 3PSR + French boutique amp + HiDiamond cables + Ayre Codex + Cardas Clear USB + Naim UnitiServe.

Headphones: Senn HD800 + Cardas litz + Auralic Gemini 2000 + Plex transformer to boost it up - Shunyata Hydra + Venom power cables.

Happy with either setup, but when I can I do prefer my main system.

I agree with you guys, but it's not as much a no brainer for me. I've heard some incredible headphone systems and they crush a similarly priced bookshelf rig in terms of absolute sound quality. Spend $2k on a headphone rig and you're near world class. Not even close with a speaker system regardless of how carefully selected the components.

Agree, with that statement. Depending on the situation a HP system can be quite useful. I built mine when I had a second apartment for work in another country, where I had to spend some time.

What I described above is about 5K.
 
If that happens to me I will invest the money on something else. Like a house / condominium and stick with my iPhone with MP3 [emoji41]

They do look very nice, but for that money there needs to be more versatility and ability to play any kind of music (see Tone Audio).

Mobile: Questyle QP1R, Oppo PM-3.

When traveling quite a bit for business as I do, a bit DSD on-the-go is not a bad idea.
 
I am with everyone else. I have a nice headphone setup, but cannot get past 30min of listening time. Moving to the Japan from the states I was really close to purchasing a Sen HD 800/Woo setup and leave my system in storage. I am so glad I did not. I would not have been happy and would lost interest in listening to music.

[emoji4] - Not saying I don't enjoy a big system, more like that a good HP setup can also be nice. Right now I am enjoying Suites Espagnolas through a 100K vinyl based system, and yes, you do not get the same kicks over headphones.

And I do feel the same about the fact, that listening to headphones is kind of tiring and tends to be limited to much shorter sessions.

But, as I do not have to choose, I am having both or more accurately all of them. When I was forced to spend a lots of time abroad, spending the nights in an urban rental apartment, I did use my HP set quite a bit. Currently it is not even connected - Suites Espagnolas.

PS: A good HP system can be very nice though for e.g. comparison of formats, such as CD/ DSD/ vinyl.
