For those with the new R2R PCM board, what's your thoughts concerning PCM material with R2R vs up sampling PCM to DSD?

I've been going back and forth and man, I think the R2R has the edge for PCM material. It has more focus. More space. A sweeter sound on vocals.

I think R2R narrows the gap between DSD and PCM....a lot.

What do you guys think?

My first client for the Phison PD2 used Hqplayer with his GG to upsample PCM to DSD 128. His thoughts were it was super smooth. Almost too smooth as Hqplayer upsampling to DSD adds extra smoothness on it's own, and the GG with it's tube output stage is already super smooth. So I think it would be a personal preference thing that people would have to try for themselves. Hqplayer has a free 30 day trial, so easy to find out. :)

This may win the "dumb post of the year award" but I think we gotta come up with a way to distinguish resistor-to-resistor from reel-to-reel. Since tape came first, how about they keep r2r and dacs are called something like r2rd, res2res, res-dac, etc. I am quite board today.

Also, is that the one-and-only Blizzard who posted above???

I heard Blizzard was shot.

Paul,

For the DAC, I'm calling it "R2R ladder" to distinguish from reel to reel tape.

Ken

For the resistor dac, it's called R2R ladder because it's R and 2xR resistors are stacked in ladder. "2" doesn't mean as "to" in R2R.

Seemed to have digressed, on the topic my recent lite 7 came with R2R and so far it doesn't sound any less smoother than the DSD.

I totally agree. However, here is the latest wrinkle...the NEW Delta Sigma PCM is toe to toe with the Ladder PCM.

AL is getting his 2nd Lampi updated (Balanced/Seibnerized/latest DS PCM) and will have both to compare. Cant wait for that! Wish i can get to NYC soon, as his IRS V is already singing and he has a few tweaks left to implement.

BTW, he says the new Globe 45s are da BOMB!

So if I understand correctly there are now 3 PCM options?

1) Delta Sigma
2) R2R Chip
3) R2R Board

If I understand correct, the original PCM DAC was delta sigma, then an R2R was released, now another delta sigma version was released. It will be interesting to see this new board. I wonder if it has an AK4490 on it? Unless he already has a new DAC built with the Sabre pro chips.

My understanding is that there is a R2R version using a R2R chip like an AK4490. And there is a R2R version that uses a "chipless" design which I assume is more similar to what TotalDac is doing using a resistor ladder.

The AK4490 is an SDM chip. I wasn't aware there was 2 R2R versions.

How do we know what we have , mine just says R2R

By looking at the board. If it's discrete there will be lots of resistors like this board:
