JOB 225 2-channel Power Amplifier ... update ...

Job products are usually sold out in a matter of hours, and so its important to get on the alert list.

It is extremely difficult to even get a loaner unit due to constant demand.

If you want one anytime soon, you have to jump on it.

Apparently it's available again.

I hate to buy the first production run of anything, but this is tempting me to break that rule.

So what preamps are people using to good effect with this amp? I'm aware of the 'high gain' problem which means a lot of preamps don't have much useable volume control.

Is anyone using the:

1) Conrad Johnson Classic
2) DSPspeaker

??

I'm using the Wyred STP/SE with very satisfying results and I am reluctant to give up some of its' features for the new Job. BTW- I assume the toggle switch is for switching inputs?

Jeez. What a giant thread ... sorry to jump in late.

Fun amp. Great price/performance ratio. Not a universal can opener, though.

Sorry to be something of a tease, but I do have a review of the JOB 225 coming out, whenever this Newport coverage ends.

Looking forward to more opinions Scot. I feel as long as the speakers are fairly easy to drive, the Job can be outstanding.

I think this nails it precisely on the head.

The other part, then, is the synergy with the speaker. I wouldn't, for example, shoot for a loudspeaker that veers toward the neutral or bright, or recommend it for folks that tend to gravitate toward "tone" and tubes ....

Caveats in place, it's a solid performer.

I agree about the easy to drive part. As much as I like the Job, I have found that with the Treos' the Odyssey Khartago Extreme has more grip with the bottom end. I switch back and forth every couple of weeks between the Wyred/Job and the Anthem/Odyssey. I'm not sure that one of Klaus's Kismet designs in the Khartago case might give the Job all it can handle and be easier to drive by a larger number of preamps. It would certainly have more current capacity with well over 120,000 AuF. If you have never heard one, you might want to take one for a spin. The price would be about the same with a 20 year warranty. I have had one of Klaus' amps in house for over 15 years and would not be without one.

I had a STP/SE running a Rogue Atlas a few years ago. Was an amazing combination, wish I'd kept it. The STP/SE is particularly good....

The Wyred does a lot of things right plus the convenience factor. If you can find one used like I did and the rest of you gear meets it's parameters it is a really good preamp.

wow. I never knew the each Pre2 was hand assemled. considering its 1700.00, what a deal.

Part time audiophille, why not run it to a bright/neutral speaker? I am running it on MicroOnes and they sound fantastic. Also, running it with a warm dac like arcam irdac made the amp change its tone completely. What I CAN say about the Job 225 is that its super transparent and will play the sound of its next in line which in this case will be the Pre2 for me.

There is no right or wrong answer here. It's like you saying "I like Merlot" and me shouting "I'm not drinking any f***ing Merlot!". There's nothing wrong with Merlot. It's a matter of taste. The fact that I wouldn't recommend Merlot does not imply anything about your taste.

More on point -- I know a guy who uses silver wire with his YG speakers and Krell gear. He's very clearly after a very specific sound signature. Me, I prefer horns and tubes. I'm very clearly after a very specific sound signature, and one that happens to be rather different from the first. So, while I wouldn't recommend the JOB for a bright or neutral speaker, my buddy might consider that friggin' perfection. I'm still not drinking any f***ing Merlot.

As for the hard-to-drive thing, that's a little different. My guess is that the JOB's kinda small PSU (the box is, what, 15 pounds?) can only do so much.

Scot,

Thank you and I agree. While I loved the Job on my TADs and everything else, I prefer it on warmer speakers like my SF Evolutions. It helps cut through the warmth on them. The Job plus horns is an amazing combo as well for some reason. I am beginning to appreciate balance in my musical enjoyment. Neither bright nor too laid back for me these days.

All Job amps are final hand assembled in Geneva!

Hi Scot,

I hope to see them in another 3 weeks or so. No dealer that I called had rosewood 40.1 in stock. The 30.1 are wonderful. I am so eager to hear the 40.1. I ran the Job on the 30.1 and it sounds great but I do confess the amp ran pretty hot on the heat sink. If it was a more permanent system, I'd add a small cooling fan.

While Harbeth are fairly easy to drive they are very inefficient sadly.

OT: @joeinid -- You ever get those big Harbeths? I really like the 30.1. Love to know what you think about the 40.1 after the 30.1's!

Hello to all ... I'm new to the forum and to this thread.
I purchased the JOB 225 once I read S. Ebaen's review (being in Switzerland I was fortunate to have been able to 'convince' JOB in Geneva to prepare a 240V unit for me ... that was in May 2013). I slotted it in where the big Parasound monoblocks and matching preamp had been driving my system. Haven't look back since. I may in due course order the new Pre2, but for the moment I turn to all of you to inquire whether anyone drives Martin Logan speakers with the JOB. Although MLs are efficient their impedance curve can be bad news for an amplifier - typically, a ML can dip to 0.8 Ohms. The Job is specified as 8 Ohms. I am presently running Gallo Reference 3.5s.
Thanks in advance for any comment

E.

Welcome commeire,

Thank you for joining. I honestly think the ML speakers are too demanding for our little Job 225. I even think anything much below 3 ohms is probably not too good as well.
