So after 3 years of playing with equipment, working on, fixing, playing and selling dozens of turntables, tube amps, etc....well, for the past several months, my system is complete. Nothing to add. Nothing to change (don't want to). I mean..half my fun is gone. Its just not fair.

Oh I know, I could buy some turntables, fix them up and sell them...but not the same. Keeping them is not an option..I only have the need for two and I have what I need.

Tubes? My tubes are exactly what I want after going through a ton...I still have multiple sets.

Cables? Done

Power ? Furmans - Done

Cartridges ? Done

Anyone ever experience this...you build and build and you finally get to where you want and poof..where did my build fun go ?

Never.

Lmao @ mike!!!! I know how you feel!
When I say my system is done , that just means I'm saving money for something new and it's going to take awhile.

Rob there is always a way to go. Maybe mono cartridge and a handful of good mono records. Maybe some new tweaks like testing things with isolation. Maybe something to help with acoustics. Maybe try Some of Jeffs record cleaning solution. Maybe a new bottle of good tequila just for listening sessions. Lol.
I admit I don't know what I'd do with myself if I considered my system done.
Congrats on being done, I'm sure you can think of something. Lol

What your experiencing is that you have been listening to gear instead of music. Music has become merely test equipment. This is what happens when you listen to gear instead of music. What you want ultimately at least is a balance and that balance is having gear that reproduces music the way you want and brings a smile on your face when you listen to music. Sounds like you are ready to experience that! Rob, look at it this way: You are in a position a lot of folks strive for! Your wallet will get fatter too! Now you can focus on enjoying the music! No more worries about shopping around for gear. Your done, your there, you have achieved, now enjoy! So you have no more gear to buy.....GOOD! Now you can focus on the music! Dig into your music collection for starters. Now you can discover more music and yes,....even buy more music! ~Eric

MD is sort of right..I have been listening to gear vs music...yes, I do listen to the music exclusively also, but more so when I was listening to GEAR..great summary

I really do enjoy listening to my music, but I have loved the hobby too...if they were not so damn expensive, I would do a tube pre-amp kit...but think my Marantz would beat it so what would be the purpose? SIgh

Over the last 1-2 years I have gone upgrade crazy with new everything, except for the SACD/CD player, and that is because it is primarily used to evaluate whether or not a CD is worthy of being on the music server. The upgrades include all new cables of every type; power, interconnect, speaker, along with the pre-amp, power amps, music server, DAC, power conditioner, dedicated 20 amp line, and a rack. While I enjoyed my system at the start, each upgrade bought a bit more enjoyment. Not because I changed gear, but because the change made the music better. Now I just buy new music to add to the server, and enjoy the music.

Rob, Music IS part of the hobby. In fact, it's the bigger part in my opinion. The gear is the means to an ends. What do you get gear for? You get gear to achieve the best sound or reproduction for the music. As I said, your are in a position that many strive to achieve, but never get there. Count yourself blessed by the audio gods. You have arrived at the sound reproduction you were after, now it's time to enjoy it. You can't really enjoy your music or even the gear if you are constantly chasing the gear. You can't enjoy the music if you are constantly thinking to yourself "I can do better, ho hum, I'll just have to get another piece of gear even though I really like this set up now". By listening to gear instead of music you now need to re-train yourself to listen to music. You got the gear and set it up to do just that. So now it's time to let go and really listen to and enjoy the music. ~Eric

Amen~!

Rob my friend, you are just caught in the audio doldrums. The winds of change will once again begin to blow and you will see through the haze the shimmers upon the horizon.

It is possible to do both :)
I enjoy the hell out of all the music I listen to. But I can also be critical of certain things and know that an improvement can be had. Just because I think I can do better in certain areas, doesn't mean I'm not enjoying the sounds I am getting . First thing I do when I walk through the door after work is turn on the system and start warming up the tubes.
And I'm never more relaxed and care free as once I drop the needle in the groove.
I'm going over a month since I sold my table and haven't yet came up with the funds for a new one. Still a few weeks away. And I've never been more miserable knowing there is absolutely nothing to look foward to when I get home from work.
To make up for it been playing loads of guitar and working on my rack one shelf per day.
My point being the music is the most important thing to me, even though I strive for better and better sound . Doesn't mean I'm just listening to gear . Means I can listen to and enjoy the hell out of both.

NOW that you're done, you can sit down and relax as you listen to music, which is why you did it all in the first place!

Then you can die happily in peace, and leave all your stuff (gear) to your wife and kids.

I haven't added anything to my system in over 4 years sure there room for upgrades there always is but I am happy where I am at for the moment. As of late I been thinking of getting back into vinyl and been researching different tables but there no rush there. I also been looking hard into room treatment that along might go further then a new piece a gear right now getting the acoustic right in the room.

Room Treatment alone has the biggest impact on sound quality improvement. No piece of gear will improve or fix errant room acoustics. If the room isn't right in any way the system will not sound right. The key to room treatment is one thing at a time and test as you go. If you are not using a dedicated room just get it as good as you can within budget, don't look for perfection. Anything you do for room treatment will make a difference.

I'll keep my wife...and my system...LOL

Listened to some vinyl this evening...sweet..I did adjust the phono stage to 121 ohm loading...I had it higher and it just wasn't quite right...also have some new tube to play with soon...like I need more tubes..LOL...I just wanted to try the RCA triple mica black plates again...1958 vintage...

I feel so bad for you. lol but this might help. From time to time a friend - dealer stops over here. He was here while ago and was so exited, he told me he finally got the amp he's been wanted for years, then he said he's selling it. I told him you've wanted it, now you've got it and you're selling it. He told me, my nick name, Woody!, I'm never satisfied! and if I ever become satisfied, then the game is over....!
