Is static always static?

My friend brought over a mint appearing Pink Floyd, Dark side of the Moon last eve. After cleaning it on the RCM it was played. There was significant static. Normally I do not have static on my mint appearing records. What else besides static can give the "static sound". (after rcming I never have real static) Could it be micro nicks or something. No I do not have the zerostat gun. I have gruvglide but do not want to use it for fear of residue.

Give me some vinyl science everyone.

im not much in record science knowledge, but i do notice that some records when brand new just take awhile to de-static. i bought a record a few weeks ago and when id take it out of the plastic sleeve it was in it was very staticy. even after using the zerostat gun i could still feel the static build up when i pulled it off the platter. even after cleaning it. it took several times of zero stat gun and playing it , and hearing the static on it badly i wanted to give up . but after a week or so ,it went away, i really think the plastic sleeve was causing the static from sliding it in and out. now it plays fine and no noise. just took awhile and several shots with the zerostat.

1) wash
2) zerostat
3) new mofi sleeve

I would always put a new, freshly washed record into a fresh new mofi sleeve before putting it on the table. Seemed the zerostat followed by in-out of the sleeve killed any residual static. YMMV.

I kept the nicer nice rice paper OEM sleeves for my less than mint pre-owned. Other OEM sleeves I would throw away.

New or used record?
If new, I would suspect a poor pressing possibly, but only after trying everything.
Get a Goat Hair brush, works just about as well as a Zerostat gun and costs far less. I do have a Zerostat and then tried a Goat Hair brush and was surprised at how it knocked out static. I usually don't have static issues unless the weather is really dry and windy.
Here's a link to the brush I was talking about, but there are many places you can get them.Sleeve City Thunderon Conductive Record Brush

That brush looks cool. The record is old but minty looking. Cleaned by AudioDesk. No dust on it. I noticed that Sleeve City likes gruvglide. This substance is either loved or hated. Can't get a consensus on it. What is best sleeve for high end vinyl and why?

I use these MoFi sleeves. No static at all.

PM me your address and I'll send you a couple to try out. That's easier than buying 50 and finding out you don't like them.

Really Nice: Pm coming

You guys on the East Coast have no idea what static electricity is or how bad it can get. :snicker: There have been days where I wondered if when I lifted an LP from my Classic platter if the damn platter was going to come with it.

I've found a very acceptable solution in grounding the spindle (from below) with a dedicated ground wire + MoFi sleeves + Zerostat + carbon fiber brush treatments to help eliminate most static buildup. Lots of work, but I live in an extremely dry climate.

I use one all the time and I'll be darned if the thing doesn't work exactly like it claims! I wish I had known about these before I plunked down for a Zerostat.
Well, if it was cleaned by an Autodesk then it's clean....or is it? I don't know how good the "ultra sound" is in the Autodesk unless it also uses brushes and then I don't know how well that works either. Judging by what owners claim for the device, I'd go with: That record IS clean.
I'd stay away from anything like Groove Glide, all it does is mess up your stylus and make it so you have to clean the record again (more than once) to prevent dust and house grime from settling back on it and sticking.
As for inner sleeves - it doesn't matter whether a record is "high-end" (what the hell is a high-end record?) or a thrift store record restored to former glory. The best sleeves in my opinion are the Diskkeepers at Sleeve City. I use them for ALL my records after cleaning. For what they do for your records they are well worth the price.

Oh, didn't I state that? Sorry, I was talking about the goat hair brush. I use one all the time now and it does about the same job as the Zerostat gun in eliminating static. My Zerostat has lots of life left in it fortunately, so I have it on reserves.

hey off topic a bit. Are there any dsotm pressing experts on this site? if so rate the harvest 1973 uk pressing in terms of noisey or not noisey
