Your way of thinking is sometimes quite complicated Paul, I truly think. ...From what I've just been reading above.
You measure the degree of happiness in relation to money and expectation, and it just doesn't ring quite accurate.
Take a break on spending in the pursuit of improving your hi-fi sound system; listen more to the music that gives you deep vibes inside you heart, and that emotionally connects you to the real life. ...The simple love of everything you see, hear, touch, smell, and taste (people, children, planet, ground, birds, food, wine, ...). It's a natural thing; it happens, it comes, goes away, comes back, stays, goes away again, comes back more, stays longer, till it stays exponentially.
You're smart, you know what counts most.
When you go to a live concert for listening to one of your favorite female artist singers, do you think about the gear?
You don't want to hear my true story; it would stabilize you totally.
Let's just say that I worked very hard all my life and I accumulated a lot of money, by making lots of sacrifices.
And then I lost it all; tried twice to start all over, but got beat up again.
I won't go into details, but now my life is much simpler, and I see differently; with much better clarity, and because of that I got much better control over my destiny and my happiness. ...Music is a very good friend and it keeps me alive; not the gear, not the money, not the toys.
Nature (outside wildlife) and people (good people) keeps me alive too.
And it didn't change at all who I am, but how much more conscious of my surroundings (people and animals) I became.
It's not what people think of you, it's not what you think of yourself, it's who you truly are.
Our main common interest here (to all of us) is the music. It is part of who we truly are. ...The music that touches us more deeply.
Keep it simple; too many people are trying too hard, and they forget that cables need to be 'cooked' (faster break-in) first for best performance. You got to excite all those molecules and atoms and protons.

Experimenting is good, but don't buy stuff that you cannot return. Music is different though, but at least you can sample it before. And it cost almost nothing (well, if you don't count all those years gone by that you spent at all the music record stores).
P.S. I slightly edited my post to be more smoothly digestible.
