Besides a bit of playful banter from the analog/tube lovers camp, in my mind Audioshark seems to be the best audio forum on the web. So far since I joined up, there hasn't been any fighting from anyone. I didn't know this was possible, but I must say I'm pleasantly surprised :)

Mike,

I/We appreciate the kind words.

I know we have our moments but everything seems to work out in the end.

You are right this is a good place with good people with a huge diversity in disposable income, but for the most part we all coexist. Even though I am a member of well over a dozen forums and have been since the mid 90's, I spend most of my time here and on Audio Circle where I have been a member since it's inception. It is the home of the little companies that could like Odyssey, Triode Wire, Vinnie Rossi LIO, Salk, Daedalus, Vapor, Van Alstine and others. All of have been through the growing pains and come out on top. Here we may disagree on one thread, but agree on the next. In the end it's all about music.

Well you guys do a great job. Very nice balance here. :)

It's only really been a year that I've spent much time on forums. I've always just kept mostly to myself, local area, and communication with engineers and manufacturers by email, or in person. I really didn't even know these hard core measurement nazi objectivists even existed like you find on some forums. Although many may not realize, I came from a background of building speakers and tuning by ear. However at the same time I value measurements because I know they can be used as a tool to assist in making great products. Great measurements can tell you that something that wasn't supposed to be there, is there. The trouble comes when the layman off the street try's to use this data to judge a product, without using their ears. There's far more information available to the ear, than can be deciphered from looking at charts. As far as I'm concerned, the end user should only use 1 tool to judge gear and that's their ears.

I just wanted to clarify that for those who think that I'm from the objectivist camp. Personally I despise the whole camp thing altogether and like to look at things from a balanced perspective.

So keep up the great work guys! :)

It either sounds right to your ears or doesn't and that's all that matters.

Nice Mike. I'm glad you're here. Enjoy.

I just realized my thread title should have said "the" not "to". Damn phone :)

The truth is "hear", have no fear. It's all about the vibe and that which cannot be glossed over by pseudo-science.

It's an interesting topic that we all know about & the same reasons that you raise, are, the reasons that this site is so good. One thing that you have to realise on this site is that there are a lot of knowledgeable guys here that have been around the block with many many different modes, more than once! For the most, the knowledge tank & actual real life experience that is in the collective of the members, is indeed, very genuine & also not an easy find. These members are not in the habit of accepting less than desirable/ignorant behaviour that is prevalent on other sites, that is why they come here, as this behaviour is not wanted or accepted.
There is no argument in music, it is indeed a common bond & we are the keepers of the same bond on this site, each & every one of us. It's only as good as it's members!

Yeah , im surprised your behaving ..... :)

Mike sets the tone here. I just try and keep things civil, which isn't that hard considering the quality of our membership.

We are all very passionate about our hobby and things can get heated at times, but if we all keep things in perspective it seems to work well.

Great forum. Some good, smart people. I consider myself fortunate to be a member. My only complaints are two (all completely imo of course):

1) There is a wide crevasse between the incivility that has occurred of late on some forums and what I am on the record here as saying is too tight of control over meaningful discourse. The pursuit of what I consider an excessive level of decorum has led to the closure of many meaningful threads and the departure of some very intelligent audiophiles to the detriment of the forum. The problem with such an extreme approach is it condones an environment where anyone can spew anything and and not be challenged on there veracity. It happens here too much. If a significant challenge occurs, the long arm of the law shows up and an incongruity is left unresolved. I come to forums to learn by getting accurate information first, and maybe some yucks and camaraderie a distant second, not the other way around.

2) I like Mike; he is a good man, a great sponsor, and he knows a great deal about our hobby. There are also a lot of very, very good dealers and manufacturers on the Shark that bring a great deal of technical information and experienced-based opinions. These are very positive attributes of the Shark. That said, there are times when I long for a place on a forum where I could go to get advice from other hobbyists who have no financial interest of any kind behind the comments they make. I realize (hope) the dealers and manufacturers on the Shark offer their counsel on a solely objective basis but I simply wish consumers had a way to mingle and exchange knowledge where no such concern exists.

I am sure these comments will meet with controversy. I am a member in only one other forum and very rarely post there; I have been around here for over two years with over 1400 posts. Please understand I provide these comments not to invoke anger, but to give my honest view regarding what I feel can make the Shark better because I care about this forums and its membership.

Paul, are you referring to me :D

The number one comment that people make when they join here is that they really appreciate the civility and respect shown from our members.

This allows them to feel free to ask any question without fear of some nasty comment thrown their way. I also think behaving as a Lady or Gentleman is a worthy goal for all of us.

I understand you enjoy controversy more than most, but I will continue to moderate this forum as Mike and I see fit.

That said, I really appreciate you being here and contributing your thoughts and knowledge. I also appreciate that you are willing to ask the tough questions, it makes us a better forum because of it.

With all due respect to this forum and it's many decent residents; I'd simply like to point out that Mike's many disrespectful comments, such as the one quoted/bolded above, plus profanity, got him banned from ASR.

Mike, please don't use this platform to disrespect others afar.

I'm not sure why you would go out of your way to drag ASR down the gutter. I have screenshots of what really went down if you want to go down that path.

IMO what's best is to take that sort of contribution to that other forum where that level of discussion is allowed to fester by example.
