Interesting article

Some dealers are invaluable in maximizing your audio experience. I just found this article interesting since the author seems so convinced....I certainly don't agree with it entirely.

He makes a good point about the Dealer experience being a lot more crucial when the amount of money you're spending goes way up. I agree with that !!

The author is taking a beating over on WBF. This model will never apply to large expensive products. Cheap audio doodads will work for his model like $100 DACs that fit in your pocket and if the 'company' goes out of business and takes your money with them you won't shed too many tears in your beer.

Well said Mark.

that is very interesting, mep is right that will never work with more expensive items. the second part of the article was very interesting and you can see more and more companies going (or trying to go) internet direct sales. cutting out the middle man to give the consumer a better deal. what happens in the future will be very interesting for sure. i find it incredibly important to go hear gear with a knowledgable dealer, but with less dealers every year, it gets harder and harder to go find the stuff you want to hear. luckily i live by nyc and can go find just about anything i set out to find. but it is already tough and i can imaging those who dont have that luxury.

+1

Not sure I agree.

Start of Rant.

Most high dollar sales are from the extremely rich and by extremely rich I mean the people that make millions of dollars for 6 months of work, that frankly could care less on sound quality and just want something that some expert says sounds best or is sexy to look at. Even then they want a deal -- so getting the deal pumps up their ego also. Ego is what drives these sales. Same with cars - they just want to own the "car", not that they really appreciate the performance of it, or drive it over 1,000 miles a year. Yes a great audio dealer can get their trust and sell and sell to them over and over again. BUT - there isn't enough of those people that want to pay more for this to support very many of those dealers. Maybe 10 in the USA.

But ---- be honest with yourself, how many people have paid or will pay an extra 20% to the dealer let alone the 2.5 times more like the article says and probably more because of the additional percentage on state sales tax? Say you go to NYC and listen to products, do you buy from them when you get home or somebody still respectable with the cheapest price? It's not like it's your local dealer, even tho the out of town dealer is where you listened to it. And NO, I'm not asking for confession time. Me, I have a local dealer that sells Shunyata products and he knows I buy my Shunyata products ($40,000 in last 3 years) from an online dealer that Ive bought from for the last 10 years. My local dealer can't match the price including the 8.25% sales tax savings. I've bought a bunch of other things from him, so he's semi happy, at least to my face, but I would understand it if he wasn't.

I think this is a lot closer to the new sales model than we think, even for high end products.

End of Rant!
