I want opinions

Randy,

I seem to remember that the little tubes in the VT50 DO need some sort of biasing and the process is a little tricky. All more modern tube amps only require output tube biasing.

Hey Jack, so the question/concern is do the little tubes require biasing. There is some crazy process that I got from somewhere. If that process is required then no way. The power tubes are ok to do, but not the crazy process....

Also I noticed on other amps it appears only the output tubes have bias adjustments.... maybe I am wrong...

There is something in steps 1 & 2 of the instructions, but whether or not that is actually necessary for a matched quad who really knows. Or if it is just something they do at the factory to verify that the tubes are in fact matched. Some of the guys here or in the Club that have more long term ARC experience would be better equipped to tell you or you can just ask them or a local ARC tech. I really wouldn't think it critical as no other company mentions it. I suspect it is done to assure a channel gain match in case the two pairs are slightly different. Doesn't seem that difficult to do.

Randy I might e-mail Chris at Parts Connexion directly and ask him. Not only is he one of the designers of the Sonic Frontier/Anthem gear but they have been the authorized service facility for many brands of tube gear over the last 25 years. He could give you a real world opinion not based on selling heavily marked up EH/Sovtek tubes.

Ok, another wrinkle... opinion please... Conrad Johnson... Classic 62... current model.... opinions... please?

So you're thinking the VT50 will be more powerful then a new Classic 62.... Spirit has a pretty decent sale on the 62's... and they can use the KT120's...

Randy

There power specs are for a limited bandwidth into 4 ohms at a higher than normal THD figure. Also higher cost more limited tube options. Also 60 has been superseded by newer model hence good sale price. In the end you have to decide if you are getting more than you have.

Ok, I just looked it back up. They must have had a misprint that has now been corrected because they had Classic 62 listed on sale last evening. Now it is the Classic 60 :(.... if this is the case then never mind :)....

Ok, so here is the deal... I signed a contract with the company that bought the company I have been working for... if I make it through transition I get retention bonus, plus as a vice president I also get three months severance plus 2/3 stock bonus (one third paid last April).... this weekend was transition, my site was released yesterday as being complete (most were not)... so on final 30 day count down...

All depending on landing new job... if I land job will get nice chunk for upgrade... so, options...

Stay with current amp(s)... upgrade STP-SE to stage 2...
Go with ARC VT80... pushing budget
Go with Job mono's or PrimaLuna amps...

Input please...

Huge congratulations Randy. I pick both the bold options.

I have not... going totally by my friends (you guys) opinions... you have served me well so far :D

I would try to "arrange" a listen if you can preferably side by side before going to the other two options because either one of them is determined by what your time frame is for changing speakers.

Randy

How about option number 4 a PS Audio BHK 250 or one of the other hybrid amps? You also have AVA and Vincent.

Oh man... another one thrown in the mix :)... mostly all depending on landing a new job.... I really like the sound of the system now.... but... but... if all works out (fingers crossed) I will need some kind of reward... :D
