I was going to put this in Joe's Job mono block amp thread, but didn't want to hi-jack his thread.

If the finishing transition with one company and negotiating with another goes as plans I may very well pick up new amp(s) and sell my current amps. So contenders... the Job mono's, PrimaLuna, going for the gold with new or newer ARC or stick with my current amps and ad KT-88 tubs for the classic ARC.

So what do you guys think? I really value options... especially since listening is virtually impossible.

It looks like you already have some great electronics. What about trying additional speakers? What about some higher-efficiency speakers to match your tube gear and First Watt amp?

Good thought... I remember back in the day I really did not like horn loaded or really efficient speakers. Maybe things have changed... but I have always preferred the European sound... British, German, etc. Speakers which tend to be in-efficient. hence the reason for considering a new amp, thinking of maybe new speakers... always loved KEF :)...

I don't think my current amps could power KEF Ref even though they do fine with the MC. The MC are 4 ohm which I think might make ä huge difference.

Since you like Kef, there's a brand new in box pair of Kef 107's with the Kube on audiokarma for $1.850. Talk about a throwback and time warp of a fantastic large speaker. That monster amp you had recently would have driven them perfectly.

Wow Randy, quite a different sounding bunch up there. A lot of variables that just one wrong move can have you chasing your tail for years. Do you want detail with extended top end & high dynamics with percussion on implemented pieces that are in the recording... or maybe a lush midrange that more or less equals out with a warm presentation that you occasionally notice but accept knowing that having it all is a matter of voicing & synergy of your system... or.....it's gonna be a hard one looking at what you have. Another thing is what is the presentation of your speakers & the sound of your listening space.... ;)

The current crop of Vac amps have pretty robust psu's & are one of the few tube amps which have 1 ohm taps. The Phi 170 also has 'IQ technology' which automatically maintains steady bias at all times regardless of volume & tells you when to change tubes. A real nice deal under $10k. And the beauty part is the amp is compatible with KT120's and KT150's if you want more output, or it can be switched to mono mode at the flick of a switch if you decide to later add a 2nd amp.

Have you considered the option of modern, single full-range, high efficiency line transmission loaded speakers? I do beleave there are some german models (not very cheap) that avoid the typicall Lowther-type coloration.
I think you'll have no problem to find them nearby you and get a try with tube electronics.
(Take mine as a suggestion based on your declared taste for "european" speakers, what I share).
Cheers.

Think you, Melgbury.
I didn't heard ever before about tube amps able to drive such a diabolic low impedance (1 ohm!!!). My McIntosh MC-275s can nominally drive 4 ohms when they're connected to the one dedicate binding post of the available three (16, 8, 4) and I felt happy with this flexibilty... until right now (glups...!).[emoji28]

Randy, can we get an idea of your room size, musical tastes, budget, etc.

Wow, how in the world are there a brand new pair still out there? :)

I very much prefer smooth with excellent sound stage. I do not like a "brash" or "loud" speaker, for lack of better term. Probably the man reason I do not like horns. I also do not like extreme, what I would call "tinty" sounding speakers. I sold Infinity for years and never liked the ribbon tweeters for example. There are several members in our audio club with Martin Logan Electrostatic speakers. Don't like them....

I have always liked the European sound; KEF, B&W, MBL, MC (which is designed by the original MBL designer and founder), etc... But these tend to be on the hard to drive side of things... I also admit to not listening to as lot of new speakers over the recent years, so my opinions come mainly from back in the day when I managed a couple higher end stores.

BTW- I have never like large woofers. They tend to sound boomy to me. Stand mounted speakers with a couple small subs seem to work nicely.

My listening area is fairly small, but it is a loft with both left and right walls being half walls and open to the space below. This tends to lead to a very open sound stage, which I like. Large speakers would definitely not work for me.

Even thou the MC's are considered hard to drive (85 dB, but 4 ohm) both my amps get them up and running just fine for my taste. I am only concerned that if I want to go with a similarly hard to drive speaker that is 8 ohm they may not be enough. I am also thinking a more permanent solution that takes the place of both my amplifiers. I have definitely decided, from the listening I have done recently, that I prefer either tubes or Pure Class A (with the JOB as the exception to this rule). I have a feeling that a larger Pure Class A might be out of my range. If this does come to pass I am thinking in the $4k - $8k range...

By the way, I listen to a lot of everything. I use to be very classic rock oriented, but any more really enjoying Jazz, Jazz vocals especially, folk, some classic rock, some classical... Norah Jones, Patricia Barber, ELP, Pink Floyd/Roger Waters, Lyn Stanley, Shelby Lynn, Cat Stevens, David Elias, Holly Cole, Fiona Joy, Diana Krall, etc., etc.; and very much prefer DSD....

Thanks Randy. Are we addressing just the amps or the speakers too?

If you're looking for class A. May I suggest something from Roger's High Fidelity. One of the most under-rated brands out there. I owned one. Delightful...

Hey Mike, thinking amps now with considerations of speakers later. I like the sound and performance of my current amps, a lot, but think if I ever want to change out speakers it may be more difficult. The MCs just have the right combo of hard to drive but accommodated with the 4 ohms allowing both amplifiers to drive them to levels I like. An 8 ohm probably would be a different story is my current thoughts.

We haven't really discussed budget. Also, depending on the speaker choice, that really would really dictate the amp pairing.

Are you 100% going stand mount vs floor stander?

Probably stand mount.... but something like the KEF Ref 3 would also work (smaller floor standing). I did listen to these; EJ owns a pair which he may sell at some point....

I was thinking (for consideration), the ELAC Adante AS-61. $2500/pair. https://www.elac.com/product/as-61/

Not the most efficient fellows, but I did hear their big brother, the AF-61.

The JOB monos probably wouldn't have too much trouble driving these, but the ELAC electronics (formerly Audio Alchemy), might be worth consideration. They have a class A input stage and class D output stage: https://www.elac.com/product/dpa-1-stereo-digital-power-amplifier/?r=us

Thanks for the input. I have heard good things about Elac for sure. Former KEF engineer and all :D....
