Hurricane Irma - uh oh

Latest projection: shows just west of Tampa.

The less Florida land it travels over the stronger it will be as it goes north. Look out Alabama.

Here is an odd thought. You could actually outrun the hurricane; it is only moving along over the keys at 8 mph.

Yes, provided it's not any bigger than 50 feet. [emoji41]

Save a thought for the people in the Caribbean. They have lost everything.
Just shocking to see the devastation Irma has left in it's path.

No words to describe what I am seeing on the news coming out of the areas affected.

The landfall on San Marco Island looks really scary on CNN.

Smart move everyone to get out of the way, stay safe.

Was bad. I'm on the east coast and it was worse than Matthew which touched down just off shore and north of me last year. Downed and bent trees (luckily so far those that fell in the wooded preserve behind me didn't fall towards the house but the ground is saturated and that could change). Branches all over and the lake behind me is a few feet on my property. The neighbors have a dock and I can see the top of the railing and the top of the bench. Probably up 5 feet. This was last night before it got back (probably at the time 45mph winds with 70mph gusts and it probably got 15-20mph higher a few hours later). I went out just before the video to let mere water out of the pool (3rd time yesterday) and it was near the top this AM. We lost power for about 8 hours. No water right now. Can't imagine how bad it was on areas of the west coast.

Just plain HORRIFIC for the giant sand banks in the Northern Leeward Islands chain.

Places like St Barts, St Eustatius, Anguilla, Tortola, Barbuda, St Martin/Marteen are wrecked.

I hear nothing much of St Kitts/Nevis, Saba, USVI , etc...I wonder how they fared?

Bahamas dodged a bullet.

Keys, Naples, Marco Island suffered significant damage. We have been luckier in St Petersburg and Tampa.

My my wife and I moved to Orlando a couple of days ago. Other than the noise and messy debris, we are good. Our hotel never lost power and services are almost normal - kudos to Marriott.

Still no word on our new home in Sarasota. The storm surge was not as bad so flooding may be not have been an issue.

Good to be safe and alive. I hope and wish nothing but the best for those affected. It will be a long road for many. Irma was a terrible storm.

We have friends with a brand new condo in Naples. Because of the path change they were unable to get it boarded up so no idea yet on the damage.

Then we have other family in Sarasota that all huddled in one boarded up house but have had no communication to know how they made out. Several of the family members lived in tailors so they may have nothing to go home to.

I think Sarasota is fine. I have a friend who moved there last Dec and drove to Gainsville to escape the storm. She is OK.

Hopefully we will meet on Oct 14 weekend.

We left Naples on Friday and are still gone. We are currently staying with friends in Virginia.

We have been told that our house and pool cage survived and there was no flooding in our neighborhood which is quite remarkable. There is no electric or water service.
Restoring power after this storm is the largest effort ever undertaken in the US and I suspect it will take weeks.

Very happy to be safe and sound and so far everyone we have communicated with that did not leave the state also seem to be ok.

I hope this is the last hurricane we have to do deal with for a long time!

Wonderful new, man! I hope the same for all the FLORIDIANS who post here.

Happy to hear you and the candy shop are unharmed, Mike.
