How many apps?

How many apps do you have to operate components in your main system?

I currently only have the one, Conductor. I was thinking though as apps become more common we could end up with a few depending on what's in the system.

Just the LUMIN app here as well. I do use another app called dB Meter that comes in handy on occasion.

A few years ago I downloaded an app for people that play records. I was pumped because I figured it could browse through my record library on the various shelves and select a record, dry brush it and place it on the platter ready for play. Turns out It was pretty worthless though as it only screamed at the user, "get off your lazy ass and play a record". However, because it did so in many different languages, I learned how to say that about 25 different ways. j/k

The Roon app,
In my car Qobuz
For recognizing songs I hear especially useful at audioshows: shazam

coming soon:
Roon arc for in my car
HQPDconrol v4 (controller for HQPlayer embedded)

Just one, my Lumin app.

I use a single app that's loaded onto a number of platforms. I use the Android, iPad and PC versions, but Mac and Kindle versions can also be downloaded.

With BluOS, I can select music from multiple sources, adjust Settings, engage Dirac Live filters (I prefer without), etc and I can adjust volume. Does the Lumin app allow volume to be adjusted?

I have two on my server. Roon and HQPlayer. Of course, zero apps when I am playing vinyl :).

I have 3 apps that are used to control my 2-channel system:

Innuos Sense - Statement Server
B & W DB Sub - DB1D subwoofers
Mola Mola Remote - Lupe phono preamp (controls all loading and parameters in the analog domain)

Those who have replied “only one app", could I ask if this app can adjust the volume while playing music? If not, then perhaps the answer is 2 as the remote control or volume knob should be considered as an app.

My reason for asking is that my present system (NAD M33 using BluOS) is genuinely a single app system, but I'm considering a hardware upgrade. I've seen a few systems (including Lumin), but I'm frustrated that I need an additional device to adjust volume as many streamers don't include a preamp and therefore require a separate device for volume control.

Accordingly, I'm inclined to look at streamer / DAC / pre devices feeding a power amp or monos. This should mean that everything can be controlled by a single app. Any alternative observations welcome. Thanks

Yes, the LUMIN app does allow volume adjustment during play. I don't know that I personally would be comfortable using the LUMIN app as a preamp volume control for a power amplifier. It would be just my luck to accidentally bump the volume control too far upwards and end up damaging my ears, speakers, or amplifiers. The way that I use the app is running at 100% volume up (and pre-setting the volume at my actual preamplifier) and using the app volume control to turn the music down if for example the phone rings and I need to answer it.

I use my pre-amp to control the volume not the Lumin app.

I would not consider a volume control an app, unless built into an actual app.

If you are willing to use the DAC there are many DAC/streamers with variable volume and remote. For example the Lumin P1, Esoteric N05xd, Boulder 812. I can't remember the model# but I believe even NAD has recently come out with one and in the Master series, looks like to me a Master version of the 658

Yes ideed, the BluOS app used in most NAD devices that include a streamer (including the M33 I use myself) has a volume control. To ensure over-juicing the amp section doesn't do damage to ears, speakers, or neighbour-relations, a max volume limit can easily be set. I set mine at -20 dB from full output so all remains protected.

I don't enjoy spending piles of cash on multiple boxes, each with a power supply and connecting cable if the guts of these boxes can be effectively enclosed in a single case and sharing a first-class power supply.

I'm inclined to upgrade from my excellent NAD M33 all-in-one (streamer, DAC, pre, power, Dirac, etc) to a 2 box solution where the power amp section is separate, leaving the rest in a single box. If I go for the recently announced and seemingly brilliantly thought out NAD M66, I can stay using the excellent BluOS amp and this will still be able to control volume as well as music choice, etc. The Lumin P1 seems to offer most of what the M66 does (although no phono stage or room correction - neither of interest to me), but at twice the price I have to consider carefully!

I do not consider my pre-amplifier as an app. I consider apps to be software design to perform a function such as decoding the digital signal or performing meta data duties, organization, etc. I consider pre-amp functions as hardware, volume, input selection, etc.; unless you are referring to 100% digital setups where your digital is the only music source. Digital setups many times have many "apps" running various functions, and sometimes several are combined under one interface.

When asked how many apps I am using I think of this as how many programs I load onto my computing/server device that perform separate functions while listening to digital music. For example, Roon controls the organizational aspect of my digital playback, meta data, etc. Roon hands off to HQPlayer which is the actually digital music playback engine.

Yes, you are right of course, but I look at how many devices (apps, remote controls, etc) are needed to be at hand to fully operate a system from a lisrening position that doesn't need vinyl or CDs to be changed every few minutes! In my own system, this is one - BluOS offers everything including control of volume. The amp has an RC remote and the front panel has a plethora of controls, but neither is needed with BluOS running. This from the LUMIN website, regarding volume control and setting maximum volume using the LUMIN App (controlled by phone or iPad):

"The main volume control will still allow 100 positions of adjustment, but now the actual volume = main volume × Max Volume %. For example: if the Main Volume is 80, but the Max Volume % is 70, then the actual volume is 80 × 70% = 56.

Note: Max Volume % works with both Leedh Volume and traditional volume control."

There is also information on how Leedh processing works, and its benefit when running a LUMIN straight to power amp(s).
