How about some suggestions for a new CD player

This ought to tell ya something: I just found out that half of the suggestions made here are going to be at The SHOW thing including OPPO! So I am going to brave it....I think (provided nothing happens at work to make me not feel like going), and go see and talk to them directly! How's that for homework?!:eyebrow:

Have fun, enjoy the music! :)

* And what is awesome too is that you'll meet people like you, socialize with them, and that it should also warm your heart.
See, you ain't so lonely after all.

Well, it's not going to be very relaxing for me actually. While at the same time I recognize the opportunity to talk direct with reps from some manufactures which will be interesting and also a rare opportunity, I'm also kind of scared or more like, full of timidness because of the energies I will be dealing with.
What I did not mention is that this is kind of a step for me. I have to prepare and psych myself into going and could chicken out at the last moment. I seriously doubt I'll meet anyone like me at such an event. It's all or mostly audiophiles and audiophile stuff and I'm not an audiophile nor am I that comfortable around audiophile gear. I have a hard time relating to audiophiles these days. I also fear running into a lot of snobs which I really can't handle well enough, so I have to keep my shields up at full power. What may also help though in that regard is that I'm not really there to socialize anyway as I won't have enough time. I'm only there for 3 hours tops, maybe less before it feels like the walls are closing in. In order to survive it I need to stay focused and strictly business.

Trust me, it's not that big of a deal. In a lot of ways I felt just like you when I went to Axpona this spring. I had no idea what to expect or how to act but I made the 7 hour drive down to Chicago and I'm really glad I did. Even if you have no idea what your looking at or hearing, it's just cool to see how high end systems are put together. Yeah, there were a lot of stuffy looking/acting audiophiles there, but there were a lot of what appeared to be casual enthusiasts too.

For the most part, the reps were very friendly and were happy to answer any questions I had no matter how stupid or simple they were. Where else are you going to be able to hear anything from inexpensive computer audio to SOTA systems that are out of the reach of 99% of people?

My advice to you is go in with a open mind, take lots of notes and pictures, and enjoy the ride!

I have zero interest in how high end systems are put together. They don't impress me in the least. I'm not going to see high end systems. I'm going for research on CD players and maybe looking at some records and that's it. I'm not worried about the reps not being nice, that's never the case. All I'm there to do is ask questions, discuss and take notes on CD players and then high tail it out of there and come home to do some more work. I keep it strictly business because that is one of the tools that gets me through. As for pictures, no way. I only have one camera and it's a monstrosity (a big ol digital SLR once the flash and extension is mounted it weighs a ton) and I don't want to be lugging it around while trying to take notes and such. What in the world would I take pictures of in the first place?

See, this is precisely why I do not read audio/HT magazines and "professional" reviews. All they do is confuse people because they are mostly written by people who have never even used the product they wrote about, much less seen one beyond a picture on the internet.
I have lots to look at and it will probably be a good 2 to 3 months before I am done with the research and homework due the the volume of products for me to look at which is a good thing, believe it or not. It's also best for me if I do not post what I ended up getting, no matter what it ends up being. I've learned not to do that. I don't need a bunch of doubt and false buyer's remorse put in my head after all the work I put into getting a big ticket item like this. It's enough just on my own to deal with.

I'm sorry MusicDirector, but a $500.00 NEW cd player is NOT a big ticket item.

Uh, excuse me, but to me it IS!!!!! This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. I knew I did not belong in a high end forum, but I let myself get talked into it. I take responsibility for that part.
Well, it's been interesting, but I'm outa here.

About a strip joint? :D

* Eric, you gotta relax; you won't find a better bunch on all the Internet than right here.
Everyone's normal here; we don't take ourselves for someone else but ourselves.

We love music; nous sommes du soleil, we love when we play  :)

And by the way; there are people here who are less fortunate than you, and that is a fact.

MusicDirector, I refer you back to the Tascam I recommended earlier. It has RCA, XLR, optical and coaxial outputs and has worked very well for me. I use it primarily during parties where I can load it up with five disks and not have to worry about the music for several hours. Played through my listening room system, it doesn't sound quite like a $10,000 player, but it sounds very very good. It's a bargain.

For $170 you can see how you like it, and if not you can get something else and give this to a child or a friend and still stay close to or under your $600 budget. Read the reviews on the B&H website. There are a few very minor cons, but people like it a lot.
