Considering adding this album to my library but was wondering what people's opinions are of this pressing. Googling I see mixed reviews, but I feel I just need to have this in my collection. I still use the CD to audition/demo new components as well as to dial in my speaker position.

Thoughts anyone? Any feedback on sonics or pressing? 45rpm pressing in particular.

Get it even though is a digital master.
 
the standard 33 rpm Classic reissue is head and shoulders above the RBCD. I have the 45 on clarity vinyl still in the wrapper, id keep it if i listened to the record more. i'll part with it when the kooks will pay 500:P

Digital mastered tho?:huh: I read somewhere Jim Anderson's Cafe Blue and Companion are digitally mastered, but still sounds awesome. Sigh, I guess that's the trend nowadays...


Rob, hang on to it for a while. I see copies going on eBay for $350. It'll only be a matter of time before you'll get your asking price.

Jim's/Patricia's stuff was recorded in digital but was mixed in analog and through an analog board.

Don't Smoke in Bed was a digital recording sent on a 1630 to be made into a CD. The Canadian Alert release in the pressing to own, not the American BN issue.

A little off topic, but do u have any info regarding mofi's upcoming Kind of Blue 45rpm release. i.e., will this be strictly AAA or will d/a a/d be in the mix? or should I be on the look out for classic's reissue?
 
I have no idea but why do you think the LP would be sourced from a digital file? MOFI AFAIK keeps analog recordings in the analog domain. Is there a problem with the KOB master tape that I'm not aware of?

Well let's just say, if the only thing that stood between the consumer getting an AAA master tape sourced lp reissue and the label issuing it was the condition of the master tape, the audiophile world would be a better place. lol.

I'm not sure what you are referring to but you pretty much know the chain of custody with MOFi, MMJ, ORG and AP. (I assume the same goes for SC and PPR bi put I always wonder whether they use the master tape or safety for their releases; they've never responded to my inquiries.)

As far as the$19.99 specials, you pay your money and roll the dice. Mike Fremer is usually pretty good in getting to the bottom of things.

Now of courts there are other issues say with RCA only willing to send their masters to two or three mastering engineers or the owners of the tape, KOJ of RR comes to mind here, only wanting to run the tape once and therefore making a digital copy and using that to cut the LP.
 
Don't quote me on this, but I do recall Fremer saying some if not all of the org/columbia reissues were either from digital or copy of master, cuz sony wouldn't let the masters leave NY. Which was my concern for the KOB.

sounds plausible. Chad Kassem told me access to master tapes is often geographic. the mastering house closest to the tapes has the best access to original masters. Its why he uses Sterling on the East Coast for Sony licensed releases. presumably the tapes travel by courier and its more secure. Sending original master tapes across the county is a no-go for most labels.

Generally true but everyone pretty much will send their tapes to Bernie eg. RCA.

I've sent a note to Mikey and am waiting to hear back.

I did browse ORG's FB page and the only Columbia I could find was Mingus Dynasty and they said it was done from the original master tapes by Bernie.

Perhaps there was an instance where the master was bad or missing?
 
Like Bernie, Doug Sax's rep preceded him and he was the only mastering house in the US some major European labels would trust with their tapes. One wonders if that privilege will extend to Chad, now that Doug has passed and he's moved The Mastering Lab to Salina.
 
I'm hoping Mofi does KOB right - I preordered it.

There are some good box sets coming out soon. Anyone know the mastering behind them? I'm talking about the forthcoming Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, and Queen Boxsets. SHF is saying the S&G boxset is done by MOV?:weird:

MOV = Digital redo.
 
That's what I'm afraid of...

I may cancel my preorder and wait for the reviews then. The reissued cd boxset sounded pretty good, so was hoping for a steller AAA pressing.

Ok here's Mikey's response!

ORG cuts Sony/BMG reissues from one of masters dubbed by Mark Wilder at Battery. No digital. When they can get masters they use them but Sony/BMG will not allow tapes to leave East coast. Masters can go to STERLING so Chad cuts Sony/BMG reissues there....
 
I read Music Matters had to take out a $1 million insurance policy on each blue note master before emi would release them. And unlike a fine scotch, these tapes are not getting better with age.
