Help me decide...

Here are more specific combos which would be most uniquely musically simpatico with an air tight and tad system?

1. Spiral groove sg2 belt drive with centroid tonearm
2. Brinkmann oasis direct drive with kuzma 4 point tonearm
3. PTP solid 9 idler drive with primary control arrow tonearm

And assume I can get any of them for the same price so price is a constant not a factor.

Darrin - I'm kind of thinking #2. There is something about direct drive that I love. I've heard a lot of tables and if I didn't own Kronos, it would be Brinkmann. Come to think of it, I've always wanted the Bardo.

I know belt drive makes the most sense from a design standpoint (the claim being that direct drive motors cause micro vibrations), but I just don't hear it myself. The PRAT of a DD is addictive.

Anyone see the beautiful Woodsong Garrard 301 on Audiogon? Maybe that one? If Mike carried Brinkmann maybe I would lean that way.

Turntable
1. Reed Muse 3C
2. TW Acustics Raven Black Knight
3. Linn Limited Edition

Arms
1. Reed 5Pl
2. TW Acustics 10.5
3. Linn Ittok
4. Primary Control

This isn't to bad.....Uses the VPI DD and platter with a more robust universal power supply. The table can accommodate two 12 inch arms.

I've heard restored Garrard 401, Thorens 124, and even the Shindo Garrard many times. They sound different than modern tables, but I like them a lot.

I would search one out before making the commitment - its more cost effective to buy/restore/source a plinth imo.

fwiw, the new Technics is supposed to be as good as the famous SP10mk2 (not sure with real plinth etc how it would compare though). I heard from a friend that it is quieter and more stable than his 1979 Luxman PD-444 which is high praise. Ralph (Atmasphere) is saying the new 1200 with a better arm is one of the best TTs he's heard, period.

Very interesting info! Is the new 1200 table setup to accommodate other arms, or would a custom modification and drilling be required? TIA!

Hi,
i think your first gut feeling will be the better one, the way to replace and go further the road on what you sold, is the Brinkmann.
bardo or Oasis if the funds are available so higher then that of course,
i had the Bardo once with their 10.5 arm and it a remarkable set up! was playing this thru ZYX R1000 and a bunch of others modern cart's.

i now "stoped" with "Balance" full stack, two power supply and Acustical System Aquilar arm (SME 12" on the other side for a more lush and "vintage" feeling with SPU's, EMT cart's)

Great advice. I picked up the Brinkmann Oasis. Will be putting a Morch DP8 arm on it to dig out all the lower frequencies. Also picked up a demo Technics SL1200G for a headphone rig.

the Moerch arm has always intrigued me, particularly the DP8. the cool thing too is availability of arm wands of different mass to suit any and all cartridges. the Oasis/Moerch arm combo should workout great, GLWT.
