I find it interesting when I started in audio it was in the mid 80's and I was a teenager, trading Grateful Dead bootlegs and other jam bands of the time. Then DAT became more mainstream and I enjoyed recording concerts. I remember trying to write CD's when buffer over or buffer underruns were common and I made a ton of coasters for friends instead of CDs. CD blanks were not cheap then. At this time internet was in its infancy (Plato in the 80's) and email did not exist, so it was hard then finding audiophiles of like minds. (My local friends today believe I am somewhat nutty spending $$ for a power cord.) I came back to audio after life distractions called marriage, career and family. I had to re-learn what digital encompasses in today's music. It was a several year learning curve and I feel I have a good sense of digital with help of people on forums like this. Mike G. a mutual friend, showed me this forum today which I find very interesting. I probably would not be here today if it was not for my new life partner (as I will never remarry) wanted better audio...she did not know what she got into--a second mistress that consumed mid to upper 5 figures.
If anyone is in the Portland/Vancouver area and is interested in audio, email me. I have a few dacs on hand and always interested in a large auditioning so we can relay our findings on forums like this. My frustration is the difficulty in auditioning dacs or other gear when they are just unavailable without purchase. I build a wonderful system by word of mouth.
