Hegel H300 Review

A very nice review Mike.......keep up with your great reviews!!!:woot:

Looking forward to the Devialet. ;)

I'm trying to get my hands on a Vitus RI-100 to try.

"The RI-100 was presented with the not-insubstantial duty of driving my reference Wilson Audio Sasha W/P...The experience was also enhanced by a bass register that was certainly generous and bloomy (this was tested with two very different speakers and in different rooms). Consequently, with rock and some jazz, the bass-full sound brought excitement and body to what can sometimes be lean recordings in these genres. Bass-heavy productions, however, could go the other way and have the whole sonic meal a tad overcooked.

Great sound that steers ever-soslightly
to the warmer spectrum
Very dynamic
Well-featured
Great bass for leaner set-ups…
…but a tad too much for others"

That definitely would not be good.

Has this left the building Mike or are you still thinking about it?

It left the building, with the Devialet right behind it. The Hegel is a wonderful integrated - especially for the money. I wouldn't think twice about owning it. It has this wonderful, rich tonality. Very very very musical. LOVED it!!!!! I may end up back there....but I want to explore some more options. Naim, the new ML integrated, the new VAC i160 SE, etc.

Now, as for the Devialet D800? Fugetaboutit. LOVED the sound, looks, remote, features, customization, technology, etc. But, 800 watts/channel? I'm saying "complete and utter BS." My 70 watt Cary's blow it out of the water. The damn thing crapped out at 91db on the D3's. It started making this awful hissing noise and then CLICK.....off it went. I was able to repeat this multiple times. For $30,000? Fugetaboutit - again! What good is horsepower without any torque?

Thanks for the update Mike. I like the simplicity of the Hegel and the minimalist design. Never had the chance to hear Devialet. Their products certainly have an aesthetic appeal to it but I just can't warm up to it. I appreciate your honesty and for saving me the trouble of finding a piece to audition. :)

Mike,

Whats the skinny on availability of the ML and Vac units any idea? Thx

Also thinking about the Hegel on some D2's in a 16x15 room normal acoustics meaning cant really treat just a living room. Think it would do well? Appreciate any thoughts.

Thx

Hmmmm?

Try the Modded M3, the RSP version! Wink.

That really sounds like a fault with the Devialets Mike. I've never heard of them doing that.

It was strange, but I had a similar issue with the 170 too. I played with the config and tried everything under advance that I thought might make a difference. On efficient speakers, it would probably be great.

The Levinson won't be out for another month or two. Brent said he would bring his 160i over for me to play with.

This is also in the running: Musical Fidelity | M6500I Integrated Amplifier

Hegel on D2 would be great, but I still want to cycle through a few more integrated amps before deciding. To be honest, if I had to chose right this second, the Rowland CS2 would be tops.

I'll be interested in your thoughts on the MF M6500I. I had an A5 integrated for a while and it was a finely crafted piece of gear. It was powerful, IIRC around 200-250w, and could easily drive many speakers but the pre-amp section left a lot to be desired. It had powerful and tight bass but the upper end was dark and dull. No sparkle what-so-ever.

When will the VAC be showing up?

You could also try the big T+A integrated, 300w@8ohm.

Whenever Brent can bring it over.

Definitely want to try the T+A too.

I enjoyed the T+A stuff when they first tried to get a foothold in the US, the hybrid amps they had sounded very sweet when mated to their speakers.

The disc player was god awful ugly, but sounded OK for a spinner... Don't they have a DAC now though?

At any rate - they've come a long way in a short time, and the people they have working for them were nothing short of sophisticated, classy, and outgoing gents (which makes me want to recommend them).

Mike, maybe you had too much static. Did you put the dog out first?
