Gryphon 300 - one month later

I am into Day 2 of my Diablo 300 break in. This is truly an amazing integrated. Looking forward to the continued and noticeable improvements!

Thanks to Mike for making this happen!:congrats:

Great choice! As Mike would say, it sounds like $80k separates.

You might find it a little uneven in dynamics the first few days. It’ll get better.

Great product! I've had mine for about eight months. One reviewer described the Gryphon sound as having "gravitas." I would agree.

Mike,

Having had the Diablo 300 and the Colosseum (using the Pandor and the MSB Select as pre-amps, right?) for a while now, how would you describe the sonic differences? Appreciate it is not like for like.

Cheers,

Andrew

I know I am jumping ahead as I haven’t even received my MSB Premier but am seriously thinking of doing a double upgrade and swapping out my Diablo for the Antileon Evo. Will use the MSB pre amp function to drive it initially. Then spend a LONG time replenishing war chest for possible pre amp amd speaker upgrade. Thoughts?

I would do it. The separates are a nice step up. Class A goodness too.

Yep, the idea of something which will surpass the Diablo is very exciting! I could quite happily stick with the Diablo forever - it is amazing. But next level...

My Gryphon dealer has very kindly agreed to order in an Antileon Evo Stereo so I can demo at home against the Diablo, on the basis that if I think the improvement is big I will buy it (with a decent trade-in value for my Diablo 300). Dealer thinks it is a slam dunk and must be confident to take the risk. Delivery should be around the time my MSB Premier arrives (end July/early August cross fingers). Stay tuned...

That’s awesome. Really looking forward to your impressions.

Will be fascinating to see if the Premier can drive the AE well, otherwise I will be up for a pre-amp (2019 minimum!) as well!

FWIW: I had a good session at my mate’s place listening to his D’Agostino Progression pre amp and stereo power amp with his Sonus Faber Ill Cremonese. After about 5-6 hours of listening I felt that the sound was very ‘dry’, especially in the mid to to high range range. It surprised me as I understand that Sonus Faber generally produces quite a warm sound. My take-away was that I suspect D’Ag Progression with my Magico S3 mk2s would not be a good match. One of the reasons why I am now thinking Gryphon Antileon Evo.

Just to be clear - the D’Ags combo was fantastic. Resolving, attack, big sound stage. But just a bit dry for my taste. Am talking small margins here.

Interesting.

Haven’t listened to Momentum, but. But a lot more expensive than the Progression and the Antileon EVO + Zena. That would be an interesting show-down...

Congrats Andrew, that sounds great! I’m sure it will bring you a nice step-up in your system.

Woah. Awaiting my Diablo 300 delivery tomorrow after a 5 month wait and you are already considering upgrading. Good times. Would be interesting to hear your comparison of the Antileon with the Diablo 300.

Haha. A rush of blood! It's a slippery slope this 'hobby' (or addiction...) of ours. I absolutely love my Diablo 300 and I intended to keep it for a long, long time. But I decided to go for the MSB Premier for my DAC, knowing it is likely to be a decent pre-amp and so sometime in the future I would have the option to swap out the Diablo for a Gryphon power amp. I wasn't expecting the future to arrive so quickly :)

Will let everyone know my thoughts on the Diablo 300 vs Antileon EVO show down. The AE will need to be not just 'better' but 'HFS better' for me to part with my Diablo.

Bet you can’t wait for your Diablo to arrive tomorrow, especially after a 5 month wait. Very exciting!

How do they compare to Gryphon? I have not listened to MSB amps before. Is there a dual mono stereo power amp in the range?
