So it's my first time here and given a plethora of choices - can one find recommendation without marketing PR , to set up an audiophile system ground up, on a budget for prosumer (if that's even possible) 2014 ?

Basic parameters -

1. Room size 15 X 10 or so.

2. The system will consist of solution for audio/video storage and playback.

Am thinkin NAS based - but open to suggestions otherwise (such as all in one box if it's compelling).

3. The speakers will double up as home theater and primary audio system.
Given a medium sized room the recommendation should be likewise.

Also they should be able to mesmerize on lowest of volumes.

4. Minimum no of components, without compromising future compatibility or quality.

So yea DAC/integrated amp/ amp recommendations welcome, unless it's addressed in storage/playback in point 1.

I've heard some great things about wireless stuff being introduced. That just adds to more confusion.

Can it be done on a budget 15 - 20 k give or take a few.

Mike,

Welcome aboard. What kind of music do you listen to? And do you have any idea on what type of 'sound' it is that you are going for?

Certainly, it can.

Might I suggest you check out Richard's site, www.aumacoustics.com to get some ideas?
He specializes in system synergy and VERY high bang for the buck.

The Lumin is attractive for the price as it covers several bases and is minimalistic.

NC390DD is a PowerDac and great to double up with a HT setup, especially running Richard's recommended ELACs FS407.

Also Linn Exakt where the source is the speaker! Not sure the price, but the Dac/amp is in the speaker!

The Emerald Physics system they had at RMAF was as good as I've heard for under $20,000. If you can stomach the looks of the speakers, I would give Walter Liederman a call at Underwood HiFi and ask about the setup.

Mike, they still dont have a centre channel yet!

It would be hard to integrate this in a HT setup without one, given the DSP open-baffle nature of the setup.

1. Welcome! :hi:
2. Wireless? I don't know; are they getting better at it now?
3. Heck, it can easily be done for three to four times less than your mentioning prices.
4. Do you have a video display already?
5. What is exactly an "audiophile system"?

He can just grab any old center! ;)

Bob, do you know the difference between hi-fi & hi-end sound? Hi-end sound is what audiophiles chase.

My Pal has a 2.3

He claims it doesnt work as you have to match efficiency, sonic signature and work it into the DSP config.

You see, the damn home theater guys do ruin everything! ;)

Moksha...do you want the full 5.1 or 7.1 surround for your HT, or is 2.1 (L/R and Sub) or 3.1 (L/C/R and Sub) good enough? For $15-$20K, I am assuming you are talking only the audio portion (i.e., not screen and projector as well). The question to above will determine whether you will need an HT-oriented receiver or preamp that can do multi-channel or if you are good with just the two channels plus sub, which will open up more "audiophile" approved integrated amps for the job.

Ha! Mike I know what you look like & how old you are :sneaky: :fingers:

Kev...you missed the part where the whole budget is $15-20K and that it needs to do HT duties as well, which means probably 5.1 set-up, so beyond the 5 speakers plus sub, he will need another 3 channels of amplification plus a receiver/HT preamp that can do multichannel :DThe LHC-208 at $13K list will leave precious little to do all the rest of that :D

Yeah, i know but my system is 2 channel & it does just nicely with the dac for movies. Who needs the .1 is my belief
