Hi guys. Just pouring through my Rock/Jazz collection trying to find a good drum kit recording with special emphasis on the kick drum. I'm looking for the in your chest dynamics, but with the maximum amount of detail.

Space Truckin - Deep Purple: Made in Japan

Haven't listened to that record in years but Ian Gillain kills it on the drums. But only if you're in the mood for some hard rock.

I wish they were recorded better but some favorites are:

Rush - Moving Pictures
Police - Outlandos d'Amour & Reggatta de Blanc
Metallica - ...And Justice for All & the Black Album

Exit the warrior
Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

Kansas Lefotoverture has always impressed me with respect to how the kick drum was recorded. in fact, in the mid-80's I attended a drum worksop with Kansas drummer Phil Ehart where he spent some time discussing specifically the recording of the kick drum and then proceeded to play along with most of the the Leftoverture album.

Now THAT's an unsung hero of rock drumming! Of course it doesn't help that Kansas' music quickly became simpler, so he had less room to show off, but play some of the longer, complex stuff they did early on, and you'll hear Phil's very inventive drumming!

To stick to the theme of the thread, a drummer that has a very unique drumming style, including his kick drum sound, is Phil Collins.

Try "Los Endos" from Genesis' "Seconds Out" or "Drum Duet" from "Live The Way We Walk Vol. 2", and you'll give you a system a thorough workout :)

Are you looking for a demonstration piece to show off your system or music you want to listen to? If it's for showing off, get the D2D Sheffield Drum album and the Track album.

Ooops...yes of course [emoji15] Gillain was lead vocals [emoji5]

I forget which version of DP (Mk II??) but my favorite grouping was:

1) Ian Paice - drums
2) Jon Lord - piano/organ
3) Roger Glover - bass
4) Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar
5) Ian Gillain - lead vocals

That grouping was killer

Yes, that is the classic MK II lineup. Did you ever listen to Blackmore's Rainbow? If not, I urge you to try out "Rainbow Rising."
