Ginger Baker (Drummer from Cream) dies

Bummer.

The recent movie, “Beware of Mr Baker” on Netflix showed what a crazy life he made from A to Z, even getting into a fight with the guy who made the movie.

He was one of the top drummers of the time!

RIP. One of the few who attempted, and genuinely succeeded in the cross-over from rock to jazz.

His 1999 Atlantic Release “Coward of the County” is one of my favorite albums. Great music. Great Sonics.

He’ll be raising sonic hell wherever he goes.

RIP

Hi Kuoppis,

Great minds think alike! ;)

Interestingly enough, his NYTimes obituary points out that he started out as a jazz drummer:

“But Mr. Baker, who got his start in jazz combos and cited the likes of Max Roach and Elvin Jones as influences, bristled when the word “rock” was applied to his playing. “I’m a jazz drummer,” he told the British newspaper The Telegraph in 2013. “You have to swing. There are hardly any rock drummers I know who can do that.”

An amazing drummer indeed. He did not think much of most rock drummers of the 60s (including Bonham and Keith Moon) and considered himself a jazz drummer. Quite a character. RIP.

He was the best rock drummer! No comparison with Keith Moon, who was great and my second best favorite. I went to many concerts by the Who, Led Zeppelin and Cream. All great. I loved seeing the last Cream concert at MSG and Ginger Baker seemed to be in the best health and the strongest of all.

Two jazz musicians and a blues guitarist playing 21 songs (22 if you count Stormy Monday on the Cream live from Albert Hall CD). My favorite group (excluding Jimi Hendrix of course). I enjoyed listening to this CD when I last visited Mike and heard the Magico M2s.

RIP

I was a Cream fan back in the 1960's. I saw them play in San Fran. I think it was at Winterland? I later saw him with Blind Faith in Portland Oregon. Both were short life groups with Blind Faith being very short. Cream broke up mainly because Ginger hated Jack. He was a bully and brauler and Jack did his best to stay away. Eric got tired of the disharmony. RIP Mr Baker

I just listened to Cream's White Room. What a super group that was! Ginger Baker's drumming there is just awesome.
As much as I liked Moon and Bonham, Baker was a few steps above.

Didn’t know Ginger was not a fan of Jack.
