Oh, oh oh, too cool Nelson. Now I'm getting a little ARC chubby again. And with my KT150's due for arrival today, it might be hard to walk around!

KT150 rollers, did you bias the same as your 120's?

From what I understand, yes, you bias them the same. As for the comment about not seeing the meters move much on the Ref 75, that is quite true if you are using a preamp like the Ref 5SE which only has 6dB of gain. It seems no matter how loud I turn up the volume, the Ref 75 power meters are always between .5 watts and 5 watts. I just received an Atma-Sphere MP-3 preamp for review and it has 15dB of gain. Now all of a sudden I see the power meters on the Ref 75 jump like crazy.

Nelson, it's very interesting you are both a VAC and ARC dealer. I have a VAC SigMKIIa pre driving my ARC Ref250 and it sounds fantastic. I'm rolling 60's Siemens e88cc in the VAC so no slow colored peaky sound.

VAC is transformer coupling while ARC is capacitor coupling so wondering have you compare both pre driving ARC amps and what are your impressions?

With REF10 into REF75, at 85-90 db levels I see meters move to maybe half way up the dial on peaks, but I usually turn off the lamps so I'm not distracted staring at them.

My KT150's arrived but were not a matched quad as TubeDepot promised, and one rattled a LOT, another rattled a little, and two seemed quiet. To their credit, TubeDepot asked that I send all four back for replacement. Those tubes are monsters, like an old c9 christmas bulb jacked up on steroids. Installed in the socket, the tube was right at the height of the cover which I am not using with the amp in the rack. With cover on, I would guess clearance only a mm or so.

Curious as to why you didn't buy your KT-150s from Upscale Audio since they do a good job of burning tubes in and matching them and the price is the same.

Different strokes. I've always had good luck with Tube Depot. On the other hand I've contacted UA a couple of times and never heard back from them. Guess they don't need my business.

Sounds like your luck ran out with your latest purchase. When I want to buy tubes from Uncle Kevin, I call Upscale Audio and start every conversation with "I want to place an order." It works every time. You may or may not have any idea how many tire kickers call up audio stores just to pick their brains and not spend any money with them. Some people go to their stores so they can hear something they want to purchase over the internet. Having a brick and mortar store is a tough gig to pull off now days.

I think you mistook me for the OP.

Let me put it these way :
I'm selling my REF150 to a local client
Im that happy with the GS150
And is only less than 20 hours in it.
:D

Nelson,

I have one I am breaking in and preliminarily I share your opinion. This is an extraordinary amp. I have 35 hours on it have done just a little listening but am pretty impressed. I am doing a REAL shootout tomorrow, but this amp is truly excellent and likely going to stay in the system

I think is going to take the REF5se spot as the best unit from ARC so far

I am assuming you are referring to the GS150 as being "the best unit from ARC". With just 50 hours on the unit I am listening to I am tending to agree with you. This is truly a very special product.

At least I'm not getting crazy alone.
I have the bass punch of the transistor now
And the delicacy of warm voice of the tubes

Well done ARC
